Months have passed since the 2023 Kentucky Derby, yet the talk about it continues. There were issues at the outset of this year’s Derby, and there were controversies at the finish when the globe saw the outsider Mage win the Grade 1 race and shock the equestrian world. Many doubts were raised, though, about the horses that didn’t even place in the top three. One such horse is Verifying, who struggled in the Kentucky Derby but has since rebounded with strong performances in subsequent races.
The Indiana Derby (Gr. 3) was held on Saturday at Horseshoe Indianapolis, and the 2-5 favorite, Verifying, won the event. The video of the horse that won quickly went viral on social media because of the significance of the victory for the stallion’s career.

The profession of Verifying has always been controversial because of its many ups and downs. Verifying traveled to the track for The Indiana Derby (Gr. 3) about a month after his narrow loss in the Matt Winn Stakes (Gr. 3). Transect surged out in front of the pack from its position on the rail. External party Georgie W stressed the matter with Verifying at that same moment. Verifying was able to maintain its lead thanks to the efforts of jockey Marcelino Pedroza. But at the last turn of the race, he was challenged by Raise Cain, and the two of them fought for a long time in the stretch. Verifying, though, never slowed down and went on to win the Grade 3 stakes with ease.
The winning rider, Marcelino Pedroza, was “playing around a little bit” at the start of the race, demonstrating his familiarity with his mount. The rider said that the stallion “really responded” in the stretch when he was challenged by Raise Cain and realized he had to pull out the victory. Trainer Brad Cox has called the stallion a “Grade 1 horse” and plans to enter him into Grade 1 races later this year to evaluate his abilities.

The horse that failed in the Kentucky Derby
On August 27, 2022, three-year-old stallion Verifying won his first Special Weight race. The horse then ran in the Champagne Stakes (Gr. 1) at Belmont, where he shocked the racing world by placing second. He showed the world his mettle in his first-ever Grade 1 competition.
The 2023 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Gr. 1) was the worst performance of the horse’s career, which had featured a string of podium places. Nonetheless, Brad Cox, the horse’s trainer, didn’t allow this defeat to stop him from preparing the horse for forthcoming Grade 3 races. After finishing second in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes, the horse won the Grade 3 Indiana Derby, restored everyone’s faith in him for future Grade 1 competition, and stands with career earnings of $745,300.
