Sylvia Weinstock was a great baker whose cakes and delicious confections are famous all over the globe. In fact, Sylvia’s cakes, cookies, and other sweet treats had earned her the title “Queen of Cake” among the Hollywood elite. Jennifer Gates, Bill Gates’s eldest, had a sweet tooth for this baker’s recipes. Naturally, the wedding cake of the equestrian couple was baked by Sylvia herself. However, shortly after their wedding, a piece of unexpected news in 2021 broke Jennifer’s heart.

Out of the estimated price tag of two million that cost the nuptial bliss, Fox Business reported that the food and beverages tag alone amounted to over $250,000. Bill Gates spared no expense in ensuring that her wedding to Nayel Nassar was a fairytale event. While Sylvia Weinstock did officially retire in 2016, she made an exception to create a masterpiece of a cake for Jennifer Gates’s wedding. When Sylvia passed away, Jennifer wrote an emotional Instagram post about her loss, expressing how much the Queen of Cake meant to her.

A heartbreaking moment for the equestrian star

The 91-year-old baker passed away in the fall of 2021, only weeks after stepping out of retirement to bake a six-tiered delicacy for Jennifer Gates and Nayel Nassar’s wedding. As she breathed her last in the comfort of her own home in Tribeca, New York, Jennifer’s heart sank upon receiving the news. In honor of the Leonardo da Vinci of wedding cakes, she posted pictures on Instagram that looked to be from a cake tasting with Sylvia.

The professional baker’s return to baking for the wedding made her departure more personal for Jennifer. In the caption of the Instagram post, Jennifer Gates dedicated her message to Sylvia, saying, “Getting to know this incredible woman, pioneer and baking legend was the biggest blessing. Sylvia, your zest for life, passion, creativity, and generosity will never be forgotten. We will be forever grateful for the gift you gave us in designing our dream wedding cake with @ladureeus. Rest In Peace.”

Jennifer Gates and her husband Nayel Nassar met via a group of top-level equestrians. The dynamic duo met while participating in international equestrian contests together as friends and later began dating in 2017. Fast forward to their wedding, the decadent wedding cake by the baker extraordinaire took the centerpiece of the event. The elaborate six-tier cake was a work of art by Sylvia, who used sugarpaste flowers as her signature design element. Sylvia also said at the time that it may take up to 40 hours to hand-make 100 similar flowers for the cake. That commitment was incredible!
