Most kids learn to ride a bicycle first and then move on to bigger things. Not 4-year-old Houston, though. He got his first stripes learning how to ride a horse. Houston Hampton is an equestrian at heart who also loves to help out his father at their farm. Everyone in the community of Sevier County, Utah, loves the kid. That is why county residents are heartbroken about what happened to little Houston this last Friday.
Houston started riding horses between the ages of one and two and can manage a horse as well as any adult can. He has a fighting spirit that keeps him from ever giving up. Now, Houston needs this spirit more than ever as recently, a horse kicked the poor boy in the head. He suffered a grave injury, and the EMTs had to rush him to the hospital.

Richard Curtis, Houston’s grandfather, said that the little boy owes his life to the EMTs, LifeFlight, and his Uncle Tyler Hampton. The uncle retold the event saying that Houston had gone to check out a trap they had laid by the lake with his daughter. They had to climb over a fence to get to the lake. The girl climbed and went over to the other side while Houston remained on the inside. Somehow, the horse got spooked and kicked the poor boy.
The attack left him unconscious with his forehead gashed. The boy’s uncle also apparently has experience in emergency medical response. Moreover, the emergency dispatch provided the necessary guidance to Houston’s father, enabling quick action to be taken.
The family still awaits the good news of the boy’s recovery and shares updates on an Instagram profile dedicated to his recovery. The whole community of central Utah has come forward to help the family. They have even started a fundraiser named the same as the Instagram profile, “Hats off to Houston.” The benefit event will take place at the Blackhawk Arena, which is in Salina, on July 19. The ticket price is $5.
Members of the equestrian community attended the event, and cowboys signed a hat to be presented to Houston after his recovery. The fundraiser organizer, Kiley Noyes, said in an interview, “The last thing this family needs to worry about is finances. They have so much more to worry about right now, and if we can take a little bit of the burden off their plate, then we feel like we’re helping.”
