This year’s renowned Kentucky Derby has provided no shortage of drama and controversy in the world of horse racing. At 7-1 odds, Two Phil’s stunned the betting world by finishing second in the annual Derby. The only race the horse has run in since the Kentucky Derby was the Ohio Derby (G3), which took place very recently.

Huge win weeks after the Kentucky Derby

In the 2023 Ohio Derby, there was a lot of drama that nobody saw coming. Due to an injury sustained by regular rider Jareth Loveberry, $27,926,425 jockey Gerardo Corrales took over for Two Phil’s. Top Picks 3-5 Two Phil after getting off to a slow start, settled in behind early pacesetter Henry Q, who was under duress from Bishop Bay over the first six furlongs. As Bishops Bay inched ahead, Hard Spun was likewise poised to pick up the race around the far turn. Nearing the last bend, Two Phil’s effortlessly seized the lead from Bishops Bay. The horse that finished second in the Kentucky Derby jumped out to a two-length lead in the early stretch and never looked back, winning by 5 3/4 lengths.

The Paulick Report states that trainer Larry Rivelli, who has amassed a total of $37,562,390 in career earnings, assisted Two Phil’s in his training and ran the 1 1/8-mile track in 1:49.60. The second-favorite, Bishops Bay (7-5) managed to finish second in the eight-horse race. The third-place finisher, Hayes Strike, was another seven lengths behind the second-place horse. In his first race back after winning the Wood Memorial (G2), Lord Miles, who was disqualified from the Kentucky Derby, placed fourth.

There was a resounding success in this year’s Grade 3 Derby. The equine Two Phil’s got the third triumph of his career, and he hopes to add many more to his already impressive resume.

Diving deep into the million-dollar horse

Two Phil’s, a three-year-old American thoroughbred horse, is a descendant of Hard Spun, the runner-up in the 2007 Kentucky Derby. The horse’s success may be attributed to Larry Rivelli, a legendary jockey and trainer.

The three-year-old horse has run in ten races, winning five. The horse shocked the racing world by winning the Jeff Ruby Steaks (Grade 3) at Turfway Park in the lead-up to the 2023 Kentucky Derby. It also came in second in the Kentucky Derby, losing out to eventual winner Mage by a hair’s length. After shocking everyone in the Derby, the horse did not run in any further races until the Ohio Derby (Grade 3) at Thistledown. The horse’s total earnings now stand at an impressive $1,583,450 after this massive victory.
