Sparks were flying at the Rogers Arena, as the two NHL teams locked horns this Sunday. The two Canadian teams who are long-term rivals, fought an intense battle on the ice rink yesterday. Vancouver Canucks vs Toronto Maple Leafs is a rivalry that goes beyond ice hockey. Arguably the two finest cities in Canada, fans of both franchises often look to one-up the other, to glorify their team and city as the best. It is a rivalry that is so omnipresent in nature that its intensity doesn’t always limit itself to the premises of the stadium.

After yesterday’s match, fans of both teams took to the streets to quench their anger. They were anything but calm and civilized after the match. The Canucks had comfortably beaten the Leafs by a 4–1 margin, and that seemed to have ticked off some people. The fans took it upon themselves to settle it outside Rogers Arena, on the streets of British Columbia. After videos started floating on Reddit, NHL fans in general expressed their disgust.

It was a full-on intense fight. It started with two men taking a swing at each other, while others intervened to break them up. As the street gained a crowd, the fight did not break up. Instead, it intensified. The blows kept coming and they were hard. And soon enough it was a whole bunch of people beating each other up. It was hard to distinguish the fans of one team from the other since the only discernable noise was those that resonated with waves of shock. A woman screamed intermittently, as a few of them went down, just as hockey players do inside the rink.

Suddenly, the fight was over and everybody went their own way. Up until then, it looked like they were in serious trouble. This was right after one of the most spectacular wins of the home team. Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the finest teams in the league, lost to the lesser favorites Vancouver Canucks.

While it’s not clear yet, it may have been the bitter loss and humiliation for Leafs’ fans that had angered them. Hockey brawls, as brutal as they are, sometimes leave players motionless on the ice. However, their fans also take such matches a bit too personally which often results in these ugly moments.

Violence has been a part of the NHL ever since its inception. However, these fan fights, as ridiculous as they are, show the widespread impact of the league and the hold these franchises have over their loyal fans.
