Before their most recent game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys won three games and lost once. Their record changed to three wins and two losses after the 49ers walloped them 42-10. The Arizona Cardinals beat the Cowboys 28-16 the weekend before last. Interspersed between the losses are three huge wins, as noted by former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe.

The Cowboys beat the New York Giants 40-0 and the New York Jets 30-10. Last Sunday, they beat the New England Patriots 38-3. While no mean feat in itself, Shannon Sharpe believed those teams had relatively “inept offenses.” Against the 49ers, who were clearly made of sterner stuff, he noted that the Cowboys’ defense disappeared.

A “historic” defense

Shannon Sharpe considered the Cowboys’ defensive line to be overrated. He wrote as much after taking to X, formerly known as Twitter. Sharpe pointed out that he heard a lot of chatter about the “historic” Cowboys defense. He hoped for a glimpse of the “historic” Cowboys defense in action. Sadly, he noted they did not show up at the Levi’s Stadium against the 49ers.

In a nutshell, Shannon Sharpe admitted while the Cowboys’ defense is decent, they are miles away from earning the “historic” tag. He added the hashtag #CowboysAreFrauds to the tweet. Before the NFL season began, Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons compared their current roster to that of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. The 2000 Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV that year after posting a 12-4 record during the regular season.

Shannon Sharpe spouted facts

According to the Wenatchee World via Cowboys Wire, Parsons believes the team is much better than the past year. He noted the Cowboys looked to have a special team this season. Parsons believed that the Cowboys’ defense was similar to the 2000 Ravens. Their defense had nine defensive starters returning. The Cowboys, on the other hand, have ten returning starters and two further additions besides.

Shannon Sharpe’s comments struck a chord with many fans. Most of them replied in agreement. For instance, one fan echoed Sharpe’s parting sentiment that the Cowboys’ defense was good but not historic.

Another replied to Sharpe’s tweet with a GIF of Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon Cooper on the TV show The Big Bang Theory. In it, he says the words, “It’s funny because it’s true.”

Yet another fan added one more GIF, this time featuring Steve Carell from the show The Office. The GIF shows Carell walking away from an upsetting situation and the caption said such would be quarterback Dak Prescott’s response to questions after the game.

A Cowboys fan then agreed with Sharpe, calling his statements “facts.”

Yet another pointed out that Sharpe’s words were, in fact, the truth.

Micah Parsons drew a parallel between the current Cowboys roster and the Super Bowl XXXV winners. If they are indeed to replicate the achievements of the 2000 Ravens, the Cowboys need to improve their defensive line. Shannon Sharpe posited that their defense has a long way to go before becoming worthy of the “historic” tag. The 49ers dismantled their defense with relative ease, recording a 42-10 win. With the season only five games old, the Cowboys may still pull off a Super Bowl win. It remains to be seen how the rest of the season progresses.
