Brock Lesnar is famous for his professional wrestling career in WWE and his MMA career in UFC. However, few people know that The Beast was also an amateur wrestler in his college days. He wrestled for the Minnesota Golden Gophers under the legendary coach Jay Robinson. A video on Twitter recently highlighted the secret formula used by Robinson to raise a wrestler as strong as Brock Lesnar. The video by FloWrestling featured West Virginia’s wrestling coach Tim Flynn revealing Jay Robinson’s advice.

He said, “Well I think we wanna improve our conditioning, but I think another thing you always want to stretch is your mind. I learned this from Jay Robinson. He taught me years ago when I was very young. When I went to his camp, if you can just keep putting them (students) in these situations where everyday is a test, then when you get into these heated matches in the quarters, semis, finals in the nationals, it’s just like another day at the office”. He also said that this advice allowed them to help a kid who lost a final.

How to both win and lose like a champ

Flynn revealed how the student was a really good wrestler, but was caught in the moment during the finals. Robinson asked him to take the loss gracefully as if it was just another test. Thus, while this advice allows wrestlers like Brock Lesnar to keep a winner’s mindset, it also helps them take losses like a champ.

Brock Lesnar won two NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship medals as a Gopher. While he had to settle for the silver in 1999, he didn’t let the loss overpower him and won the gold medal in 2000. Robinson forged several more champions from Minnesota and has 14 individual national champion students. The Beast takes the legacy of his legendary coach forward each time he steps into the ring. The mental toughness he forged back in 2000 is serving him perfectly even after 23 long years as he turns the ring into Suplex City each time he fights.
