David Taylor has his bar set for other NCAA wrestling teams. Ever since his entry last year, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have become more significant with time. Developing and emerging themselves since the John Smith era, the performances given out this season have seen major differences in scores.
With a perfect record of 12-0, their latest win against No. 20 Missouri has moved them up to No. 2 in this week’s NWCA Coaches Poll. David Taylor’s Cowboys now join Penn State (10-0) as the two top undefeated teams in the country. Adding to its prominence comes their attendance record, specifically in their dual matchups. The Sunday’s match crowd of 10,740 saw a 30% increase in the season average record of 7,597.
Coming in with his dominant aims for the team, Taylor’s vision for the Oklahoma State Cowboys sees improved versions in terms of attendance, as stated before. Other factors include its marketing in terms of streaming services including ESPN and ESPN+. With over seven home dual matches this season, all of them were broadcast on ESPN+, with the last one coming as special.

As they create history on Sunday, David Taylor shares the real menu behind the success of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, with mention of the attendance, the marketing, and record-breaking performances by its wrestlers.

“Um, yeah, I think it’s been a great season. Um, I think the things that we wanted to accomplish, um, from that side of things from an attendance side of things, from a marketing side of things to display. Um, the best attributes of Oklahoma State, I think, we’ve been able to do that well and then also just that set, you know, the bar high and we’re going to continue to surpass that move forward collectively. So yeah, it’s been, it’s been a great start,” he says in a recent media interaction.

David Taylor’s promising era with OSU
The Oklahoma State fans have been enjoying the Taylor era quite well this season. It’s like he has become a household name in NCAA wrestling. A credit to his coaching of the Cowboys wrestlers and the extended request appeals on social media makes his relevance as a head coach stand out more.
However, with its standout wrestler, Caleb Fish, on the roster, Taylor’s wise words haven’t ended just for him. And an exhibit of it was seen right after the victory over Northern Iowa. The head coach said, “I just think he’s doing a lot of really good stuff this year… He’s very disciplined on and off the mat, very coachable, and that was a good opportunity for him to go out tonight and get a good win.”
Depending on the situation and occasion, the head coach has come in to appraise many others, including the strong critiques given out to many of its team wrestlers.

In the seven duals played, all the wins came with scores made above 30 against their ranked opponents. The list includes Iowa Hawkeyes, Utah Valley, Oregon State, Wyoming, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, and more.
With no matchup played against the No. 1 Penn State this season, David Taylor’s wrestlers are dominating. However, the tension between the two teams has grown, given that Taylor was a Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling team alum and now, has joined the Oklahoma State Cowboys team as a head coach.
