Moreover, when the 2023 US Open title holder enters the ring, the contenders alert themselves. But behind his fierce self lies instances of struggle.?
The 23-year-old, who now does mindful planning ahead of his games, faced the hardest blow of his life 3 years ago. The Colorado native keeps his family the closest and pens gratitude notes now and then. Having said that, a 2020 tragedy took the legend by shock and days of dysfunctionality followed.
Wrestling champ’s personal loss

The 130kg gigantic man, whom the world fears when he showcases sheer excellence in the wrestling ring, lost his sister in 2020. Near his Colorado home, his younger sister Sammie met with an accident and passed away as a result. During that time, he went through a difficult phase, balancing the COVID pandemic stress and wrestling practise. As the Tokyo Olympics were nearing, the then 20-year-old was giving his best every day.
Though the grave situations tried to consume him whole, some mantras helped him pull through. Moreover, showing gratitude towards his coach, he said, ?Wrestling was a bit of a getaway for me. My coach is former Olympian?Frank Molinaro and he teaches us to have an attitude of gratitude, which helped me through all the highs and lows, just being grateful for all of the opportunities.”
Only focussing on wrestling and investing a decent amount of time in his holy sport, the 23-year-old proved himself as the strongest. His wins and accolades stand as a testament to practising resilience throughout. Having said that, some iconic wrestlers had a great role to play in Schultz’s life.
He may have secured a significant position in Greco-Roman recently, but the history matters here. Years and years of watching legendary figures like Rulon Gardner and Dremiel Byers, he improved himself.

Rulon Gardner had won gold at the 2000 Olympics, battling past title defenders like Aleksandr Karelin. On the other hand, the 49-year-old Dremiel Byers had clinched the Greco-Roman title at the 2002 World Champion. As these legendary figures made their individual marks, they also ignited hope in a little boy’s heart.
Talking about them, Schultz said, “Having guys like them to watch and aspire to be like growing up, it was a blessing. And now being able to work with them and have talks about what it takes to be the best? I?m very grateful.” He further spoke about them individually. Said, ?Dremiel teaches me more about the mental side, about how you?ve got to keep your emotions in control and go out there and kick some butt and score some points. Rulon has taught me about the importance of consistency, and being in the right place at the right time.?
