Nino Bonaccorsi, a senior from the University of Pittsburgh, achieved victory at the 2023 Division I Men’s Wrestling Championship. The wrestler clinched the 197-pound weight class championship. With this, Nino bagged the victory 15 years after a wrestler from the University of Pittsburgh held this title. What makes this accomplishment even more special is the fact that Bonaccorsi remained undefeated throughout his senior year.

In the impressive final match, Bonaccorsi secured a 5-3 win over Tanner Sloan from South Dakota State. He showcased his skill and determination even after being injured severely. It’s interesting to note that his coach, Keith Gavin, was the last Panther to claim the NCAA championship back in 2008. While Bonaccorsi stood out individually, it’s important to acknowledge that Penn State emerged as the team champion in the competition. Two of their wrestlers, Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks, also claimed championship titles in their respective weight classes.

Nino Bonaccorsi says it was surreal for him

Bonaccorsi, who hails from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, trained by an esteemed group of coaches. In an interview with FloWrestling, Bonaccorsi shared that he might have torn his labrum during the quarters against Pentz or Allred. This defines the wrestler’s dedication toward his sports, as he won the title with a torn labrum.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Bonaccorsi said, “I’m incredibly thankful to continue with Pitt wrestling. To be able to train here while also working with the team and helping Pitt wrestlers achieve their dreams is something that I’m really looking forward to. It will be a very new experience for me. I want to be able to help the Pitt wrestling program in any way that I can, and this feels like the perfect position for me to start with in my career.”

Gavin’s vision made Bonaccorsi wrestling’s path to success
