Purdue University wrestlers, the Purdue Boilermakers, have once again proved themselves to be the best. The wrestling team has been in form since the 1913-1914 season, right after the popularity of football surfaced. Since then, individual wrestling starlets have qualified for the NCAA Championship and flew past all competitors. Having said so, the annual Boilermaker Dual crowned its well-deserving winner again.
On November 20, Sunday, coach Tony Ersland’s team combined three tech falls, three pins, and three decisions to stand out in the end. With nine bonus point wins on the first day, the Boilermakers stood strong with a 2-0 lead. On one hand, the home team defeated Indianapolis scoring 44-0, and further defeated Illinois scoring 22-13. To honor the win, a celebratory post has appeared.

The X handle of Purdue Wrestling posted the news, which read, “Boilermaker shut out. Purdue wins all 10 matches, six coming with bonus points and it’s our largest margin of victory since 2019.” Winning all 10 of the matches, the Boilermakers unfurled their flag with a shutout rout in their opening match itself.

Locking horns with the Indianapolis Greyhounds, Purdue’s freshman Ashton Jackson accelerated his team’s performance with the first pin. The Boilermakers and Greyhounds had a similar match in history, which ended with a 45-0 victory for the former. In the same, bonus points in six back-to-back matches gave them the lead and awarded them the first shutout since 2021.
James Rowley won 19-2 (5:35) and Dustin Norris secured 16-1 (7:00) to earn their first wins. To this, coach Ersland had said, “To see young guys go out and give you a full effort, execute our plan, and believe in what they’re doing was awesome to see.”? Amidst the exciting scenes, the Game 2 win for Purdue was a little easy on their nerves.

Purdue Boilermakers’ journey of excellence all throughout the NIU clash
Boilermaker’s wrestling crew got more comfortable after the first nerve-wracking game. Clark’s tech fall with a 17-2 (5:26) gave the team a much-needed lead. Two takedowns and three near falls from him, paired with Norris’s stellar performance. Blaze’s 10-2 bonus points, specifically his first dual bonus points, contributed a great deal to defeat NIU.

Another star to anchor the team was Stoney Buell, with a 4-2 decision. Moreover, Cruz’s dramatic finish and Ben Vanadia’s 12-4 major were the perfect ending to the night. As the first Purdue wrestler to compete at the 2023 NWCA All-Star Classic, Matt Ramos is coming on November 21. While several men and women wrestlers had already competed in this iconic event, Purdue is taking its first step since 1967.
