The Bryce Jordan Center saw yet another jaw-dropping performance at the hands of the No. 1 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, who thumped No. 2 Iowa, 30-8, in a dual billed to be the most important dual of the season. Instead of a closely fought duel, it became a one-way demonstration of Penn State’s supremacy, strengthening its case for a dynasty in NCAA wrestling even more.

In a sellout attendance, eight out of ten wins for Penn State, with several of its top-name wrestlers putting in statement wins. Luke Lilledahl started with a dominating technical fall at 125, and then it became a theme for the night to follow through with. Mitch Mesenbrink took apart No. 2 Mikey Caliendo 19-4, and Shayne Van Ness cruised over Kyle Parco 17-6 at 149.

Even in closely contested battles, Penn State refused to fumble. Four-time national champion Carter Starocci narrowly beat out Iowa freshman Angelo Ferrari in a closely fought bout, and Greg Kerkvliet added a 12-2 major at heavyweight to seal the blowout. So dominant in its skill at the sport, everyone, including observers and enthusiasts, starts to wonder—can one stop them? And, if one can, when?

How long can Penn State remain at the top?

They have won 66 in a row and have not experienced a loss in five years, dating back to when they beat them, ironically, at the hands of Iowa in 2020. That loss must have seemed a long, long time ago, and the Nittany Lions simply continued piling distance between them and everyone else in the universe of wrestling. The Nittany Lions’ supremacy seems almost a foregone conclusion at this stage. Under Cael Sanderson, the Nittany Lions have become a wrestling behemoth fueled by dominant recruiting, unparalleled coaching, and a success ethic that refuses to relent.

What is it about Penn State’s grasp that is so unbreakable? Depth and development. Sanderson recruits high-fliers in and out of state each and every year, taking in a constant flow of talent out of high school hotbed Pennsylvania. But in addition to recruiting high flyers, the coaching staff turns them into national championship wrestlers at a dizzying pace.

What’s your perspective on:

Can anyone dethrone Penn State's wrestling dynasty, or is their reign unbreakable under Cael Sanderson?

Have an interesting take?

The statistics don’t lie—Penn State isn’t simply piling up college titles but creating worldwide heroes, with an abundance of wrestlers with eyes for Olympic golds and world titles. The program isn’t geared for college alone but is a worldwide championship-producing mill. Without any indications of a slowdown, everyone is asking—is any real opponent in store?

What happens Although its mastery of the sport looks unshatterable, one part of its fan base foresees danger in store in the loss of a critical player, Cael Sanderson, who can retire and shatter its dynasty. “So long as Cael Sanderson is in charge.” That message rang out in the wrestling community. What he can build and develop in terms of talent and a winning atmosphere and make them an unmatched presence will not cease, at least not anytime in the near future, so long as Cael Sanderson is in charge.

A new dynasty, according to some, will soon arise. “Give David Taylor a couple of years at Oklahoma State, and Penn State will have a competitor.” Taylor, a one-time legend at Penn State, is coaching at Oklahoma State, and many believe that championship pedigree will ignite a new dynasty. But not everyone is convinced yet. “Cael and Penn State look tremendous,” one observer insists. “PA high school wrestling is the best in the country, and therefore, he’s got a tremendous recruiting base in his backyard.” In fact, such is Penn State’s recruiting success that even developing programs will have a challenge competing with them.

Another fan summed up the inevitability of Penn State’s continued success: “A very long time considering the recruiting classes and depth of that room. They are on cruise control and preparing for NCAA’s, Worlds, and Olympics year-round.” The sheer depth of talent and the program’s focus on global wrestling success make it hard to imagine anyone dethroning them soon.

But then again, many believe that Penn State can fall in house. “I’d say as long as Cael is in residence OR until he creates a Nick Saban model and starts churning out a whole lot of great coaches who go off for big pay days to become head coaches at other universities.” As long as Sanderson’s coaching tree bears fruit, high-powered assistants will depart for other universities, taking with them and re-planting Penn State success at a new site.

For at least for now, Penn State’s dynasty continues unscathed. In spite of having a presumptive adversary in view, they have a long distance yet to go in overthrowing the Nittany Lions. What was the greatest lesson of Penn State’s dominant win over Iowa? That’s not an endpoint, but a new page in their unprecedented era of dominating over NCAA wrestling.
