At the 2023 World Wrestling Championship, Winchester found herself against strong international opponents on the mat as the 2019 world champion advanced through the stages. However, the story was different from her 2022 season. The 30-year-old was back in her game but with renewed strength and technique.

She stormed through her opponents in all three of her qualifying fights held on 18th September. Winchester scored a total of 28 points off her counterparts while giving away just two. In fact, she gained a flawless 10-0 semifinal win against Germany’s Anastasya Blayvas.

Japan’s Haruna Okuno now stands as the fierce competition between Winchester and the 2023 World Wrestling Championship gold medal. The Japanese grappler wields great technique and strength and has two world championships under her belt. A tweet on X showed a smiling Winchester walking out of the arena after solidifying her spot in the finals. Winchester looked at the camera and said that she’s “excited to wrestle and ready to wrestle.”

While Winchester is the 2019 world champion, Haruna clinched the title in 2017 and 2018. The match between Haruna and Winchester already looks like the ultimate clash of the titans. While Winchester now has a clear shot at the gold medal, America’s Jennifer Page got knocked out in the semis.

American wresting icon Jennifer Page was enjoying a fabulous ride at the World Wrestling Championship. However, the 59kg weight class wrestler was eliminated in the semifinals by China’s Qi Zhang. The Chinese wrestler wields the silver medal from the 2017 U-23 World Wrestling Championship.

Zhang dispatched Page with a 5-1 victory and nullified Page’s hard-won battle against Japan’s 2021 world champion, Sae Nanjo. Despite her semifinal exit, Page put on a great maiden campaign effort. While the gold medal may be out of her reach now, she can clinch the bronze just like Zahid Valencia.
