In a social media post, the official USA Wrestling account has shared details of the members who will be heading to the Croatian capital for the tournament, scheduled for 10th to 14th January. Among the team members, the most prominent names are undoubtedly Kyle Snyder and Helen Maroulis. Both Snyder and Maroulis are three-time World Championships gold medalists in the freestyle wrestling category. The post on X reads, “The 47-athlete U.S. team set for the Zagreb Open in Croatia, Jan. 10-14, includes numerous past World and Olympic medalists and team members.

It is hard to overlook the latent excitement. 2023 hasn’t been a great year for Snyder. The World Championships in Belgrade didn’t yield satisfactory results and Snyder is itching to make his mark among the elites in the year’s first senior ranking tournament.

The 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist Maroulis also won a bronze in Belgrade. Both Maroulis and Snyder also appeared on the UWW’s year-end lists. While they haven’t appeared at the top of their weight classes, the upset rankings should work as the perfect trigger for both of them to up their games further. And it’s not only their opponents who they need to subdue to confirm their spot on the national team or the 2024 Paris Olympics.
