The Ohio State Buckeyes have had a pretty impressive wrestling season in 2024. Finishing the regular season with a brilliant 15-2 overall record, the wrestlers carried the momentum to the postseason, where they finished the Big Ten Championship in 5th place while walking away from the 2024 NCAA Championship in 8th place. But then a disaster struck their coach, Tom Ryan.
Only two days ago, the collegiate wrestling community was shaken after news of Ryan’s car accident came to the fore. However, the Buckeyes might be looking at brighter times ahead after a tumultuous two days bracing up for the worst. In a recent news flash on social media, fans have been assured that Ohio’s wrestling head coach is well, and is in recovery.
In a post by Nick Corey on X (formerly known as Twitter), excerpts from Ryan’s son Jake have been shared for Ohio fans to breathe a sigh of relief. “He’s doing good today,“ claimed the post. “He broke his femur and had some breaks in and around his knee. All on his left leg. They repaired most of it yesterday and will finish the rest today,” elaborated the post further.

Ryan’s non-life-threatening accident kept the roads closed for over an hour, and he was later rushed to the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center in “serious condition“. The coach was also charged with failure to control his vehicle, which is a minor misdemeanor.

Ryan was appointed as the Buckeyes’ wrestling coach in 2006. Since then, under his able leadership, the Ohio State team has won the NCAA Championship in 2015 along with five second-place finishes in the national tournament. Ryan’s resume also boasts coaching at least 10 wrestlers who went on to represent the school in all 10 weight classes in the NCAA Championship over the years. Tom has also achieved the honor of NCAA Head Coach of the Year twice and Big Ten Coach of the Year thrice. Understandably, news of him ramming into the rear of a parked semi-trailer truck on Highway 270 sent shockwaves across the country’s collegiate wrestling scene.
This season, the Ohio squad finished eighth in the national championship, not his best performance considering the high benchmark set by himself over the years. With another season waiting to commence, fans hope that Tom Ryan gets the care and time needed to bounce back from the ordeal with his close ones and fans standing firm in his corner.
