The NCAA wrestling season is becoming one rollercoaster ride that fans hadn’t expected. While a series of upsets in recent weeks, wrestling connoisseurs are being treated to exhilarating moments one after the other. And none of the battles are more intense than in the 125lb weight class. Only days ago, the newly crowned wrestler in the category Drake Ayala of Iowa fell to Matt Ramos, who secured a 4-1 decision win at the Craver-Hawkeye Arena. And now, Ramos’ latest win seems to bring him spoils that he couldn’t have imagined only a week ago.

Ayala has been on a dream run this season with eight straight wins, bolstering his claim for the top spot. However, while the Hawkeyes claimed the day with eight wins in ten matches, it was the Purdue junior who recorded the major highlight of the day.

According to the latest WIN ranking, Ramos is back at the top of his weight class thanks to his triumph over the Hawkeyes’ senior this past weekend. The 125lb class has seen a high turnover rate this season, with several wrestlers claiming the spot from time to time. Ramos has been at the helm of things after starting the season as the No. 1 ranked athlete in the weight class, which he had to hand over to Marcus Blaze. However, according to the latest rankings, it looks like Ramos’ antics have throttled him back to the top once again.

Scoring the only takedown in the match, Ramos pulled off a major win in front of almost 15,000 Hawkeye loyalists who were sure their champ would reign supreme in the lightweight matchup. Thanks to the loss, Ayala is now the No. 2 wrestler in the weight category and needs to take a step back to devise new strategies to reclaim his top position.

The national finalist from last year, Ramos, also toppled Antony Noto of Lock Haven from the No. 1 spot with a resounding win earlier this season. With Ramos once again rising above his colleagues, one might think his shaky start to the season may have provided the boost that the Boilermaker needed to finally turn things around.

A wobbly start and finally finding the NCAA glory

Starting the season as the top prospect in his weight class, Ramos met with a few unexpected losses that cast a long shadow on his dominant status. At the Clarion Open last November, Ramos was handed a 4-1 decision loss by high schooler Blaze. December saw Ramos struggling to find his footing with two losses from Nebraska’s Caleb Smith and Stanford’s Nico Provo.
