Jordan is slated to host the U-17 World Wrestling Championship, which is scheduled for August 19 and 25. The event will feature freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s categories, with 586 participants from 58 countries competing for gold at the Princess Sumaya Hall in Hussein Youth City. Team USA boasts a formidable lineup that includes the U17 World Greco-Roman champion Jordyn Raney, dual medalist at the 2024 U17 Pan-American Championships, Emmit Sherlock, two-time 16U Nationals Greco-Roman champion Loc Webber. However, the escalating tension in the Middle Eastern region has cast a shadow on the events. According to a post on X by The Wrestling Room (Pat Menio), the flights booked for the US delegation heading to Jordan for the U-17 World Wrestling Championship have been cancelled.

That puts Team USA’s 10 participants and their coaches in the blue about whether they will be heading for Jordan or not. The situation is indeed grim regarding travelling to Jordan or the Middle Eastern countries since several major airlines have cancelled their operation in the region. Amongst them are Swiss Air, Lufthansa of Germany, Air France and its subsidiary Transavia France, which have put flight suspensions in the region. Likewise, Aegean Airlines, Air Algerie and AirBaltic have so restrained themselves from operating flight services to the region till at least 19 August.

The flight fiasco left the fans fuming. They seemed clearly upset about the situation and came down hard, expressing their frustration bluntly. One fan pointed out straight away that Jordan wasn’t an ideal choice for the U-17 World Wrestling Championship in the first place. Without mincing his words, he said, “it shouldn’t have been there in the first place, actually.” Another fan joined in and took the argument further, stating that the events should have been shifted to a more favorable location months ago. Another fan shot back with a rather easygoing statement, suggesting the USA as the best venue for the event. “Plenty of venues and hotels right here,” suggesting that the US would be the best choice if organizers decide to shift the venue.

However, the reaction took a rather blunt turn when a fan discredited the entire Middle Eastern region from holding any such events; “Middle Eastern countries should not be holding that sort of event, period. It’s not safe.” While fans are understandably upset and concerned about the situation surrounding the U-17 World Wrestling Championships, it’s important to note that the event is still scheduled to proceed as planned. Despite the uncertainties, wrestling enthusiasts can still look forward to witnessing their favorite athletes wrestle for gold.
