Iowa Hawkeyes Wrestling superstar Spencer Lee recently appeared in an online podcast interview speaking about several topics. The 3x NCAA Champ also dished out some tips from his personal knowledge bank to help fellow wrestlers. Just a few days after, Hawkeyes head coach Tom Brands has followed suit and dropped some valuable advice of his own.
Tom Brands is currently in his 18th year as the head coach of the esteemed Iowa Hawkeyes Wrestling. A social media post caught Brands giving away some pro tips after one of his most successful students, Spencer Lee, did the same. Interestingly, a lot of what Brands said seemed to take Lee’s wrestling advice a notch above.

Iowa Hawkeyes Wrestling posted a video of a press conference attended by Tom Brands on its official X account. The video caught Brands saying, “I think that making things look easy as a wrestler doesn’t necessarily mean it is easy and in order to make things look easy you got to work extremely hard out there.”

While it seemed the usual ‘hard work has no substitute’ tip, the Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling head coach also added parts of his own philosophy to it. He said, “How hard are you willing to work in your matches, that’s a decision that individual competitors have to make.”
While Spencer Lee said that one needs to find out if they are a game plan person or a flow person, Brands asked wrestlers to find out how much the grind suits them. Apart from the grinding hard work, the Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling head coach also talked about some strategic decisions.

Tom Brands on the pros and cons of strategic gameplay
While Tom Brands agrees that strategies play a big part in matches, he said that too much of it doesn’t work on a good opponent. The Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling coach noted, “You got to take some risk, but there’s a balance there too. You know you don’t want to be a dum-dum out there, but it doesn’t have to be that hard.”

Lastly, Tom Brands mentioned that one must fight matches with vigor and entertain the crowd. This was an offhand way of the Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling head coach asking wrestlers to be creative in their matches. The Iowa Hawkeyes have been a dominant wrestling program for several years following these very principles. As the Iowa wrestlers move to their next matches, they would look forward to implementing Brands’ words and winning big.
