Is Gable Steveson a wrestling prodigy or just another athlete struggling to find his true calling?

Gable Steveson has been a contentious star in sports for quite some time now. Despite an Olympic gold medal in wrestling, he went on to give up wrestling. Instead, he signed with WWE, only to have his career take a rather unexpected turn. Steveson’s decision to switch sports did not work out as he imagined. Eventually, this led to his release from WWE. After this came the biggest curveball of them all!

Steveson went on to announce that he would return to collegiate wrestling for one last run with the University of Minnesota. While he expected this to be a smooth welcome. It turned into a pot of controversy. A barrage of backlash rolled in from fans who felt like Steveson returning was unfair to those who are student-athletes. As Steveson returned after nearly 980+ days, the world was more annoyed than happy about it. However, his first match back was a spectacle for the ages.

When the world says ‘comeback,’ the kind of dual Gable Steveson had is what is expected. It was only recently that wrestler turned MMA fighter Bo Nickal went on to say, I think the biggest mistake he made was getting out of wrestling so early.” And the statement seems to stand true as Steveson went on to perform and win like it was second nature. So what happened in the dual?

Gable Steveson went on to earn an 18-3 tech fall win against North Dakota State’s Drew Blackburn-Forst in just 1:50. The win helped the Gophers continue their dominance on the mat, as they won all ten matches in a 39-0 win against the Bison. Talk about performing like he never left! And Gable Steveson seems rather happy with his performance, too. So much so that he might be thinking of continuing wrestling professionally!

What’s your perspective on:

Is Gable Steveson a wrestling prodigy or just another athlete struggling to find his true calling?

Have an interesting take?

After earning his first NCAA win in over two years, Steveson’s focus is clear. He is on a journey to become one of the greatest wrestlers. In fact, he might even give another Olympic gold a shot. As Steveson himself puts it,Yes, I would love to go to LA 2028. I think it’ll be really good, especially with it being in America. Having America’s best show up and win at the highest level is definitely one of a kind.” Why not, right? He is, after all, already an Olympian. Despite his great return and ambitions, there are still some critiques. But why?

Well, Steveson’s return, while monumental, is also coming from someone who has a significant amount of experience. Unlike most student-athletes who are just beginning their journey. This becomes all the more clear when one looks at Steveson’s Tokyo win. Remember what happened? In the final match against Georgia’s Geno Petriashvili, Steveson went on to have a last-second takedown. This pushed his score, and he won 10-8! So, the critique from the fandom is an understandable one. However, Steveson, with no regard for criticism, continues to dream. And his dreams don’t stop there either!

Gable Steveson is stuck in a rut of opportunities yet again!

When an athlete is great at something, it is only natural that opportunities come along. But from that point, the opportunity they chose to take is a matter of the mind. And if there is one thing about Gable Steveson’s journey, it is that it has never been clear. Of course, he got a lot of opportunities. But ended up making the wrong decision. While he ponders LA2028, it was only a few days ago that he revealed another dream!

Steveson spoke about the possibility of a future in MMA! After spending time with UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Steveson was inspired. “After being in that camp with Jon Jones, that definitely put a major spark in me to go out there and do MMA. Not sure about the promotion yet. But Jon definitely lit a fire under me,” said Gable Steveson. Yet another possible switch! However, the pattern of inconsistency with Steveson is being noted!

Even Bo Nickal, the former PSU wrestling star turned UFC fighter, took notice. “He’s bounced around quite a bit,” Nickal said. “MMA is not an easy sport either. It comes with a bucket of its own challenges. It’s not a game. The consequences are so much more serious than any other sport.” It seems like Nickal is reminding Steveson about the integrity of the sport and the value of dedicating oneself to it. So now the question that remains is, will Gable Steveson continue this game of switching? Or will he finally figure out his calling and commit?
