Despite being a high schooler, Bo Bassett has already proven his worth as an elite wrestler. A three-time Walsh Jesuit Ironman winner, the Bishop McCort Catholic student has been turning heads on the mat for quite some time now. His accomplishments have also brought about comparisons between himself and the likes of David Taylor! Off the mat, Bassett’s future has the fans’ attention as speculations about which college he will end up at are rife. And now, Iowa loyalists have another case for themselves.

The #1 national recruit of the Class of 2026 has been checking out wrestling programs all over the country for months. While several varsities would love to have Bassett on their roster, the 8x Pennsylvania Junior champ is yet to make a final decision. But Hawkeyes fans seem to think the choice should be obvious, considering the new information that has come to light.

In a recent interview with FloWrestling, Bo Bassett spilled the beans on his favorite wrestler of all time. In a post on X from January 27, the Pennsylvania native hailed Iowa Hawkeyes’ Spencer Lee. When asked who is the one wrestler that he looks up to, Bassett named the 3x NCAA gold medalist without deliberation. “I gotta go Spencer Lee. That’s my guy. I looked up to him since I was young,” he said candidly.

Bo also highlighted how he’s been lucky enough to watch and train with the Olympic medalist in close quarters from an early age. “There’s a picture of when I’m twelve years old, maybe younger, and he was a junior, or senior, in high school, and we trained together those years at the Young Guns room. He’s a great role model,” Bassett told the FloWrestling host. With his admiration for the Iowa alum being so high, Hawkeyes loyalists justifiably seemed to believe this should be a foreshadowing of the rising star’s future.

Naturally, Iowa fans swooped down to take the opportunity to urge Bo to stop his college hunting spree and settle for Wrestletown. The wait to see where Bassett ends up is making the Hawkeyes fans nervous, and they seem to be tired. “Bo just teasin at this point,” said one Iowa follower, who seems to think the high school grad’s dilemma is taking too long to come to a conclusion. Others agreed with vehement enthusiasm.

Spencer Lee’s journey to the Olympic podium wasn’t an easy one, to say the least! Battling several injuries throughout his career, Lee scaled a stiff uphill climb to reach the spot, and without a shred of doubt, his experience in Iowa helped him tremendously along the way. With that in mind, more fans want to see Bo working with Jay Brands in the coming days. “Hopefully Bo Bassett follows Spencer’s footsteps and comes to Wrestletown USA,” one fan sounded hopeful. “Yep he’s a Hawkeye,” another fan’s optimism is even more determined.

In November last year, rumors of Bassett collaborating with “Magic Man” David Taylor were doing the rounds after the former’s visit to the OSU campus. With the Olympic gold medalist as his mentor, many wrestling pundits posited, that Bo could become a true enigma. However, now that it’s revealed that the high schooler holds the former Iowa wrestler on a higher pedestal than the OSU head coach, fans are sure that this could mean a surprising twist of events. “The hawks got a chance” commented one fan.
