With a new season comes the anticipation of how things will unfold. For collegiate wrestling fans, the NCAA Championships are a thrilling affair that they love to keep a keen eye on. The 141lb weight bracket is looking like the perfect stage for titillating showdowns, especially with multiple high-profile stars competing in the weight class. However, another explosive force, Andrew Alirez, can make things difficult for everyone else.
Earlier this year, the 2023 NCAA champ sparked a lot of speculation about his future after he entered the transfer portal, but ultimately decided to pursue his final year at UNC. From the looks of it, vengeance might be the thing that’s helping Alirez keep his head in the game.
The latest post by Christian Pyles on X has announced Alirez’s intentions to compete in his old weight class for his final collegiate year. “Andrew Alirez is staying at 141.” explained the post as the hosts of the accompanying video noted how the 149lb bracket was also speculated to be the target for Alirez in recent weeks.

However, considering that Ohio’s Jesse Mendez will also take to the mat in the same bracket, the final decision probably isn’t too surprising, considering their recent meeting went at last week’s Beat the Streets, the annual benefit bout. 6 days ago, the reigning national champ in the 141lb bracket, Mendez defeated Alirez with a 4-1 victory. With the recent wound still raw, Alirez’s decision comes as not entirely unexpected.

Along with Mendez, there will also be other stars who will pose a significant threat to Alirez’s hopes of clinching yet another individual national title. With many of them being All-American wrestlers, as the post also reminds us, things will get all too intense in the 141lb weight class.
Andrew Alirez will have a monumental task ahead
Discounting Penn State in any way or form should be out of the question when it comes to collegiate wrestling. NLWC’s Beau Bartlett is also one of the country’s more popular names in the 141lb bracket and has also has his own score to settle with Mendez. At the 2024 NCAA Championships, Jesse beat Cael Sanderson’s student to win the national title, and Bartlett will also be looking to set the record straight at the next chance he gets. Predicting how Alirez will fare when he gets caught in the crossfire between Beau and Jesse is a difficult thing to say.

Furthermore, the 2022 NCAA champ in the same weight class Nick Lee is now the new assistant coach of Penn State, and his new role will undoubtedly give Bartlett an extra boost to the engines. On the other hand, David Taylor being the new head coach of OSU will make the Cowboys a force to be reckoned with. Iowa’s Real Woods and Nebraska’s Brock Hardy will also be tough competitors who can easily spoil the day for the UNC star.
With Andrew looking at such a talented pool of opponents, fans will have to wait some more to see if his plans of revenge work out, or if he hits a roadblock with another wrestler along the way.
