

Glen Lanham the head coach of Duke wrestling, announced the team’s schedule for the 2023-24 season. They will be competing across five months and six states. Challenging nationally ranked wrestler from last season. In the new roster, Glen Lanham has selected Gaetano Console to be the team captain for the season alongside Conner Barket and Jarred Papcsy.

Gaetano Console is one of the most talented and uprising wrestlers of the Duke wrestling team. He qualified for Fargo in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Gaetano, an Illinois resident, is now enrolled in Duke and is one of the most integral parts of the wrestling roster of Duke. Despite giving wrestling so much time and excelling at it, Gaetano is not just limited to that. He is invested as a wrestler while on the other hand, Academics is something that he likes to excel at.

Meeting “extraordinary” people at Duke
Sharing a glimpse of his life Gaetano expressed how it feels to be a part of Duke. In a conversation with FloWrestling, he discussed the whole spectrum of students who are enrolled at Duke. From students extra-ordinarily excelling at academics to sports. Talking about the difference he talked about his lab partner, he said, “This guy is crazy, he is a biomedical engineer with a computer science double major with a minor in neuroscience”. That is what a typical Duke student looks like, it is a very common thing that can be found in Duke students. To have a diverse academic portfolio. Talking about the contrast he said, “The basketball players are just walking around here every day and they are just completely normal guys and seeing people like that too.” Talking about the contrast of academics and sports. He further explains the contrast that there are future Nobel Prize winners on one hand and on the other there are future Basketball MVPs.

Balancing academics as a wrestler
Gaetano as a Duke student himself very well represents the contrast. From being an excellent student-athlete to being an academic buff. He is enrolled in pre-med and ever since his school days at St. Viator High School, he has been keen to become a medical professional. He has brought his passion for both wrestling and medical sciences to Duke.

Discussing his academics more, in an interview with ncsasports.org he said, “Academics have always come easy to me, in fact, most people do not know that I was pushed ahead a grade.” He is grateful that he can bring both sports and academics to the table and excel at them.
