

Last season, the Oregon Ducks volleyball program had its special moment. The program entered the Big Ten volleyball league for the first time. And the Goliath tasted success in its opening season. It ended the conference season with a 14-6 record and found a place in the NCAA Regional Sweet 16 round. It was the program’s 10th time in the round. Ultimately, the Ducks had to face failure as the Pittsburgh Panthers knocked them out of the league in a tight five-set battle. The season ended for them, but their heads held high. In this journey, Onye Ofoegbu’s name came as the prominent character.
The 6’3″ middle blocker ended the season and her collegiate career on a high note. The price of her success was ready for her meanwhile. In December last year, Onye landed a call from the League One Volleyball (LOVB) league’s Atlanta. Now, she will soon take the volleyball court again. Her jersey will be different. How was Onye Ofoegbu’s form at UC Irvine?
Coming from Cerritos, California, Onye Ofoegbu’s primary choice had been the local volleyball strongholds. The list includes names like Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club and UC Irvine. Among those, in Mizuno, Onye found an optimum environment to sharpen her volleyball skills. The application of it came into public at UC Irvine. In her three-year collegiate career at UC Irvine, Onye amassed some phenomenal numbers.

In 2022, Onye touched the mark of hitting five or more blocks in 16 matches. Her 0.372 hitting percentage kept her at the second rank in the Big West. However, her number of blocks (143) made her the topper in the Big West.
In 2021, Onye Ofoegbu achieved a hitting percentage of 0.409, ranking 15th in the NCAA. Her average was 3.13 kills per set, and she recorded 1.26 blocks per set, placing her at 32nd nationally. She set a personal best of 23 kills with a hitting percentage of 0.688 in a four-set match against Cal State Fullerton. Twice she achieved 10 blocks, completing double-doubles with 17 and 13 kills against Lafayette and UC San Diego, respectively. Before that, she appeared in 2019 as a freshman at UC Irvine. During her freshman season in 2019, Onye recorded an average of 2.10 kills per set and finished seven matches with double-digit kill totals. Her best performance attained 17 kills along with a 0.519 hitting percentage. In the end, she averaged 0.82 blocks per set. In 2023, the middle blocker didn’t take the floor, utilizing the redshirt option in Oregon.

During her senior year in 2024, Onye Ofoegbu had the opportunity to display her skills for the Oregon Ducks. She caught the option with both of her hands and put the Ducks in the front seat. The middle blocker from California appeared in 32 games and played the most number of sets (117) with teammates Noemie Glover and Mackenzie Morris. She scored 290 kills with 2.48 kills/set with a hitting percentage of 0.369. As far as the number of blocks is concerned, Ofoegbu had 148 beside her name, with 1.26 blocks per set. Also, she amassed 26 digs. In the last match of her collegiate year, she claimed 13 kills against the Pittsburgh Panthers with a hitting percentage of 0.360. Did she receive accomplishments for such extraordinary performances? Yes, she did.

What are Onye Ofoegbu’s accomplishments?
In 2022, during her stint with UC Irvine, Onye Ofoegbu landed an honorable mention in AVCA’s 41st All-America teams. Before that, she had entered the Pacific South, gaining first-team all-region selection. In 2021, she was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week. In her freshman year, Onye earned a spot on the 2019 Big West All-Freshman Team. During her career for the Ducks, Onye Ofoegbu claimed Third Team AVCA All-American honors.
