The University of Illinois volleyball team is facing a challenging Big Ten tournament. As the game has proceeded into the final month of the regular season, the pressure is on. The Fighting Illini had a recent setback on Nov. 12, against the leading Nebraska volleyball team. However, as the Illinois team faced a loss last Sunday at the Devaney Center in front of a crowd of 8,584, it did not dampen their spirits.

Refreshment is a prerequisite for every match. Illinois players seized the opportunity to share fun moments to build momentum, which was a delight to the fans. And they surprised their fans through hilarious impressions of none other than their coach.

A near-perfect imitation of their coach

A recent video has surfaced with the backdrop of the match between Illinois and Nebraska. At the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Illinois players are seen imitating their head coach Chris Tamas. Middle Blocker Cari Bohm, senior outside hitter Raina Terry, and many more Illinois volleyball star players gave their extremely amusing expressions. Big Ten Volleyball posted the amusing clip on their X with the caption “They nailed these impressions.”

In the video, the players reanimate Coach Tamas? stoic expressions, and how he calmly intimidates them. ?He comes back to our huddle, he mumbles. Get the head down, it?s the look down,? the players recreated the coach?s demeanor in unison. The video also drew a parallel between the players? imitation of Chris Tamas? real-time impressions. It is Chris Tamas’s seventh season at the helm for the Illinois team.

The Illini has a 9-7 record in Big Ten play and has moved to 14-12 this year. They dropped a four-set Big Ten contest to the top-leading Nebraska on Nov 12, with a score of 1-3. Despite losing the game to Nebraska, the Fighting Illini had put up a powerful third set behind outside hitter Raina Terry. She had the final two kills and altogether 10 in the third. Although they had bear defeat against Nebraska, they put up a fabulous display against Ohio State.

Fighting Illini fights back against Ohio State

On November 16, Illinois beat Ohio State in an intense five-set battle. Illinois started by winning the first set 25-18. Ohio bounced back strong as they took 2nd and 3rd sets 26-24 and 25-20. However, the Illini gave their best to take the fourth set 25-19 while keeping the match alive. Setter Brooke Mosher, started the decisive set with three straight aces that finally helped Illinois take it 15-6, sealing the victory. Mosher came out as the star of the match as she recorded her 15th career double-double when she dished out 50 assists and tallied 16 digs. She also led the way with seven aces.

The ongoing 2023 campaign is the 50 season for Illinois volleyball. The Fighting Illini are pumped up to give their best and make it to the NCAA tournament as they stand in the fifth position at present. They face Michigan on November 18. Before they wrap up their Big10 campaign, they will have two more matches to go against Minnesota and Northwestern.
