It’s the end of November. The official bracket for the upcoming 2023 NCAA DI Women’s volleyball tournament will be finalized soon. Along similar lines, teams are pouring all their efforts into securing a berth at the NCAA as the tournament is near. The 2023 NCAA tournament would comprise 64 teams competing against each other in a single-elimination tournament.

While forty-two of these spots are already allotted to the teams as automatic qualifiers because of their win in the conference, the remaining 22 spots will be chosen by the NCAA selection committee. But this is more than just the change happening at the NCAA tournament. This year, the NCAA tournament will feature game-changing metrics by including KPI.

The recent NCAA Women’s Volleyball tweet featuring Michelle Chester was captioned, “As the DI Women’s Volleyball Committee convenes for Selections weekend, they will be considering a new metric this year: KPI Michelle Chester has the details.” According to Chester, a new metric will be used by the NCAA Volleyball Selection Committee this year. The selection for the 2023 NCAA volleyball tournament is this Sunday.

Some of the primary criteria that the selection committee is looking at will be the rating percentage index or RPI, head-to-head competition, significant wins, and losses, and results vs. common opponents. KPI is a metric that will be used to evaluate a team’s resume by assigning value to every game played by the team. Consecutively, it assigns scores for each match ranging from +1 point for the best win to -1 point for the worst loss. In addition, a virtual tie will reward zero points to the team.

Then, adjustments at this point will be made based on the opponents’ location and quality. Then, these game values will be added and divided by the games played to achieve the teams’ KPI rankings. Chester added, “A team’s KPI can be broken into categories: KPI in how games, KPI in conference games, etc., and all games, including those against non-DI schools, are qualified, and each begins every season at zero.” Need clarification with KPI and RPI?

Difference between KPI and API

Even though getting confused with KPI and RPI is evident, there is a slight difference between the two. While KPI is used to identify how hard it was for the teams playing to achieve a record despite their given schedule, RPI is more recorded as the winning percentage. Overall, KPI rewards more for the quality of the opponent, whereas RPI records winning percentage, rewarding more for the opponent’s win-loss record.
