Narrating his personal experience, Averill said, “I learned how to talk to coaches, I learned how to voice my opinion in a healthy way, I learned how to manage my emotions in a healthy way, and that’s not easy to do. It’s easier to be pissed and act pissed and everyone knows you’re pissed.” Averill also acknowledged that he is working on this concept himself.
He said, “ I’m still not perfect. Like to be clear, it’s still something I struggle with. I think a lot of players are scared to voice their opinion.” The volleyball star further said, “Everyone’s talking smack on how, you know, this coach is so boring, this drill sucks, like just complaining.” Mentioning this, he said that the best way out of such a situation is to speak up.
Averill added, “And I’m over here like, let’s change it. Let’s find a way to get guys excited to be here because, in my opinion, that’s sustaining.” While Averill advised players on speaking to the coaches, a beach volleyball duo had also shared a similar lesson about speaking with teammates.
