The Omaha Supernovas‘ title defense plans appear to be on point! We can easily say that after the reigning champions kicked off the Pro Volleyball Federation League on the right foot, crushing the Atlanta Vibe 3-2 on Friday. In fact, they had kept that momentum rolling against the Grand Rapids Rise too, until the game took a ‘bloody’ turn. Yes, not the 3-0 sweep, but an unexpected collision stole the spotlight and left people gasping in the arena. And now, a brand new update on the injured player has arrived.
With a crowd of 8706 strong in attendance, the Van Andel Arena witnessed the Omaha Supernovas captain, Brooke Nuneviller, having a head-on collision with her teammate, Natalia Valentin-Anderson, as the two went in for dig attempts at the same time. After the two were helped back onto their feet, Nuneviller left the court, straight to the locker room with a towel covering what was assumed was a bloody nose, while Valentin Anderson walked to the bench. Clearly, the captain ended up getting more severely injured than her contemporary. But here’s the update that everyone is talking about.
The Omaha Supernovas captain, Brooke Nuneviller, added a TikTok video on January 13, unveiling the aftermath of the hard impact that startled their team yesterday. The video clip read, “Trigger warning: BLOODY LIP,” on a 10-second-long snippet that showed Nuneviller zooming into her face, holding up her lip that appeared visibly swollen and slightly slashed, with red wound marks. But everything seems to be under control as of now. In fact, her caption, “who says volleyball isn’t a contact sport” even displayed some playful sarcasm as she smiled while displaying a thumbs up, indicating that things are back to normal.

Well, this was some much-needed clarification. Until yesterday, Nuneviller’s injury was assumed to be a bloody nose, which in reality turned out to be a lip tear. Also, the way things had changed, with her leaving the court and Ally Batenhorst coming in to fill, fans were truly concerned. After all, the captain had saved the defending side twice in the first set, once with a trio of kills right at the start, giving the Omaha Supernovas an 8-3 advantage, and another 3-0 run when the sides were tied at 12. Thus, as an invaluable player, it’s relieving to know that Brooke Nuneviller is in prime shape. In fact, she is ready to joke about the mishap already, as she captioned her video, “But we got the dub so it’s fine😂.”
Clearly, Brooke Nuneviller is not just ‘captain cool,’ but also the asset who can turn around matches. Shortly after she returned from injury in the second set, Nuneviller went into overdrive, terminating on her next three swings, which took the Omaha Supernovas to 25-23 and gave them a 2-0 match lead. Despite the pain and break in momentum, the captain appeared as determined as ever, starting set 3 for the Supernovas with the first two kills. In fact, by the end of the game, it was amazing to watch how both Valetin-Anderson and Nunviller shook off their injuries, finishing with 11 digs and 4 kills and 19 digs and 15 kills, respectively.
But yes, game interruptions have become a trademark of the Omaha Supernovas this season. While their match against the Grand Rapids Rise halted due to this rough collision, the one against the Vibe hit pause due to a bizarre cause.
A weird ‘bat’ interruption halts Omaha Supernovas game
Imagine being engrossed in a tight game of professional volleyball just when a creature decides to land up on the court. Well, the 13,486 volleyball fans seated in the CHI Health Center and the players on each side of the court were equally confused when this happened for real. The Omaha Supernovas were facing the Atlanta Vibe in their season opener when a bat entered the arena, and as it took flight above a record-breaking crowd, the game had to be paused for obvious reasons.
The Atlanta Vibe posted the same on their account and captioned it with a playful twist, “Surprise visitor for our first match of the season,” they wrote. But they weren’t alone. A slew of witty reactions followed at this unusual instance. “A bat in CHI Health Center watching Supernova volleyball was not on my 2025 bingo card,” wrote the Nebraska Public Media along with the footage.
