The USA Volleyball team secured a major victory against Canada on 22 September 2023. While the initial set made everyone believe that the Canadians would prevail once again, the resilient Americans proved everyone wrong. The US bounced back from adversity and gave a fitting reply to the Canadian offense.

Riding on the staunch support of their middle blocker captain’s shoulders, the US volleyball team built a strong defense. In fact, their defense kept getting stronger with every round and became impenetrable, resulting in the defeat of Team Canada.

The decisive volleyball battle between America and Canada

The high-stakes match at Colorado Springs between the USA and Canada was a true battle of the Titans. However, the American side came back with renewed strength and claimed a victory at the 2023 NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six.

While Canada didn’t allow much space to the US in the first set, the US responded with three consecutive set victories. Both sides were enjoying an unbeaten campaign so far, but the Canadians registered their first loss against their American counterparts.

The US topped Canada in almost all metrics of the scorecard. The US outscored Canada in terms of kills (45-37), aces (4-2) as well as blocks. In fact, Canada could only manage to block six kills by the US, while the US overwhelmed and defended 19 kills. This ironclad defense served as the biggest reason for the US’ win. Team captain Patrick Gasman emerged as the leading point scorer, with 17 points including 8 kills. 

The national teams were competing in their third edition of NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six. In the previous two campaigns, the US lagged behind Canada with the bronze medal, while Canada took home the silver. However, the US volleyball team now stands a chance to win the gold medal, as it has advanced to the finals. While the US posted an overwhelming win, they were almost on the path of another defeat after the first set.

A reset in rhythm that changed the game

The first set of the match was almost a wipeout, where the US couldn’t overtake Canada even once. The Head Coach of the national team, Andy Read, regrouped with his squad and changed its rhythm.

According to team captain Gasman, “It took us like a minute to settle down and play within our system, and the system worked great in sets two, three, and four.” The team’s libero, Mason Briggs bolstered the US defense with ten brilliant receives and eight digs.

The US will face defending champions of Cuba in their next match. A victory at the Pan Am stage will hugely boost the morale of the squad, which will enter the Olympics in another 307 days.
