It is a great time to be a volleyball fan in America. The national team earned an incredulous victory at the Pan American Games held in Edmonton, Canada. Following in the footsteps of these giants, the collegiate stars also rose to the occasion and delivered remarkable performances before the home crowd. The Huskers faced off against the Badgers on Saturday, and the former rallied for the win in the final two sets. The opponent team from Wisconsin was troubled by this sudden overture of the rankings on the leaderboard. The Wisconsin Badgers had entered the match as the undefeated No.1 collegiate volleyball team and were not ready for this outcome.

They were bemused by the rivals’ unexpected onslaught and looked for reasons to justify the results. The clarification came in the form of a video interview from Nebraska’s coach, John Cook. A small portion of the interview was uploaded on the official Huskers Radio Network’s Twitter account with the caption, “🔊 @jcook2 on the team’s focus after 10 conference games. #GBR”. During the interview, Cook laid down some tenets of “coaching 101,” where he prioritized building the champion mentality.

John Cook said, “its about creating a culture and a mindset” that looks beyond past victories toward future challenges. The Huskers have five home matches remaining, starting with Maryland. Cook is preparing his players for the long haul and does not want to see them becoming complacent. He addressed the volleyball stars, saying, “If we wanna compete for Big 10 Championship, you gotta win”. These words have resonated with the team, who are training harder for the remainder of the season. While both the players and their coach do not want to dwell on their recent victory, their opponent cannot help but do so.
