The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament is full of several intense rivalries. While many rivalries see both opponents on equal footing, some rivalries are usually more skewed to one side. Searing through one such rivalry, the women of K-State registered a staunch victory to end their longtime losing streak against Texas.
The Texas Longhorns and Kansas State Wildcats have a conflicting women’s volleyball history, with the Longhorns being the dominant rivals. However, 8th November saw Texas take a humiliating defeat as K-State stomped through their ranks. A social media post congratulated the Wildcats for the win, as it broke free from a 39-match losing streak.
A victory that Kansas volleyball fans waited 20 years for

The K-State Wildcats have been performing exceptionally well compared to the previous seasons. The women of Kansas State showed immense growth and fortitude against longtime nemesis Texas as they won the game without conceding a single set. The tweet carried the caption, “‘Break a 39-match streak’ typa night.” The K-State women’s volleyball program has been consistently losing against the Texas Longhorns. In fact, the last time Kansas won against Texas was over two decades back on 15h October 2003. This year, however, the Wildcats had a new development up their sleeve.
Kansas State appointed Jason Mansfield as the new head coach of the Wildcats women’s volleyball team this season. Mansfield previously served as an assistant coach for Kansas State and has now been promoted. The new head coach is already showing great results as his team powered through its 39-match losing streak against Texas. In fact, the Wildcats smothered the Longhorns down in a perfect clean-sweep victory.
Snuffing all Texas attempts to secure a set win
The K-State Wildcats exacted a fitting revenge against the Texas Longhorns on 8 November as they claimed victory via a clean sweep. Statistically speaking, both teams put up nearly identical performances and were equally matched. However, Kansas always made sure to snuff all Texas attempts to secure a win.

The match ended with three extremely close sets with a score of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-21. While the K-State Women’s Volleyball Team ended its 39-match losing streak against Texas, it also ended Texas’ 13-match season win streak. Moreover, after beating the third-ranked Texas, K-State now has wins over two top 10 teams including eighth-ranking BYU.

On the day he assumed the role of the head coach, Mansfield had addressed his students. He said, “I came here to build a program that lasts, a program with high character, great connection to each other and the community, and lastly, a passion to compete.” True to his word, the team is definitely making a new mark this year.
