In 2013, the Nebraska Huskers volleyball side made quite a huge decision. They decided to change their stadiums from the NU Colosseum to the Bob Devaney centre. It was quite a huge move, as the Colosseum had a long legacy, which the new centre would find very hard to replicate. But, eleven years since then, not only has the Bob Devaney centre replicated the atmosphere for John Cook’s team, it has actually improved it tenfold.
The stadium has become the envy of many fans, thanks to its electrifying atmosphere, where the crowd refuses to stop cheering—even when their team seems on the verge of defeat. This unwavering support is a major reason why it’s been over two years since a John Cook-coached side last lost here. The coach himself acknowledges that the passionate crowd plays a significant role in this impressive success.
According to the Journal Star, he had spoken about this after the Huskers’ match against the Wisconsin Badgers last month, which they won in a dominant fashion with a scoreline of 25-21, 25-22, 25-19. John Cook said that the crowd really had a major part to play in this victory, as their support just didn’t make the team lose. “After the first half of the first set, I was thinking, ‘There is no way that we’re going to lose this thing with our crowd and the energy that was in there,’” Cook said.

John Cook then acknowledged the fact that the team had increased their fanbase a lot since the team’s day in the Colosseum, which is really helping them leave their mark in the NCAA. “I think the biggest thing is we got a whole new generation of fans in here. We doubled our fan base from the Coliseum.”
Cook said. “I think that’s helped build Nebraska volleyball because more people get to experience it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from people after the first time they come here and the next thing is, ‘How can I get season tickets?’” Thus, it is a major factor in Nebraska Huskers’ major success this season, which has seen them cruising to the NCAA elite Eight. Looking at their resilient performance against Dayton university in the previous round, there’s definitely a chance of them making it to the next round.

John Cook’s Nebraska side enjoyed a great 3-1 win in their last game against Dayton University. The game also got a lot of attention as it was aired at midnight. However, Cook wasn’t really a fan of the new timings. “I wasn’t really excited about playing until midnight last night,” he said in a candid manner while talking to Huskers online. This might have something to do with the fact that the team had to train at noon to compete at midnight, which was quite a long wait. Thus, his concerns are genuine.

However, John Cook also praised the new model of women’s volleyball where fans can witness numerous games live in one day, as it has brought a lot of eyeballs to the sport. “It’s a great product; it’s a great show; it’s a great sport. It’s super exciting.” The fact that major networks like ABC are getting involved is a great sign too. But Cook compared the whole streaming now to Netflix, saying, “What do you guys call it when you just do Netflix every day? Oh yeah, binge-watching!” Thus, John Cook seems pretty excited about the future of the sport. Hopefully, he can also lead this Nebraska Huskers side to history by winning the NCAA title once again.
