It hasn’t been the best past few months for the Texas Longhorns. Last month, Creighton shattered the 2022 and 2023 D1 Volleyball champs’ three-peat dreams, making their fans feel the blues. And now, as the Longhorns seek to add new attacking prowess to the roster, the team’s loyalists continue to believe that Texas needs to up its game if it wishes to reclaim its high throne in the collegiate volleyball scene.
Over the 24 years that Jerritt Elliott has been the head coach of the Texas women’s volleyball squad, the Longhorns have become one of the most formidable powerhouses in the NCAA circuit. While the team might not have enough to show for winning the national title, its threat to others is considerable. However, as Texas looks to make the most of the transfer window, fans don’t seem to be satisfied with the attempts to make amends for last season’s heartbreak.
Lincoln Arneal’s post on X from January 4 highlights the newest addition to Texas’ roster. As per the social media update, former Indiana libero Ramsey Gary has committed to the Longhorns and will commence her 2025 season under veteran coach Elliott. With two years of eligibility left, Gary will bring something fresh to the table for her new team. Considering the many achievements she has racked up throughout her career, it should be guaranteed that the Longhorns will benefit from the libero’s prowess.

With numerous All-Big Ten and AVCA honors to her name, Gary is a force to be reckoned with. While Indiana hasn’t had much to show for in their 2024 season, the sophomore Ramsey has been a driving force behind the team’s small success stories. With the recent national triumphs the Longhorns have tasted, it’s only natural that they would try to replicate the same as soon as possible, and including Gary in the squad is only likely to boost those chances.

However, not all the fans are happy with the move, and many believe it’s not enough if the team aims to keep up with the big teams like Nebraska and Penn State. “Makes no sense,” commented one fan flatly, underscoring that Texas should find ways other than just adding more recruits to the team to assert its dominance in the NCAA scene. “Weird decision for her,” stated another fan, who believes that a U-21 National Women’s Team honoree like Ramsey Gary should have aimed bigger as her next step after Indiana. Soon, others joined in.
Ramsey Gary’s inclusion might not help the Texas Longhorns’ salvation, fans opine
After the team’s unexpected fumble, the squad has been dealt more blows to the guts. From outside hitter sensation Madisen Skinner to Jordyn Byrd, a number of Texas’ most reliable stars are on their way to leave the Austin campus in search of other camps. Under such circumstances, it’s normal that head coach Elliott is scurrying to find other athletes to fill the void. However, fans aren’t entirely on board with the decision to rope in Ramsey for the tough task ahead. But some fans seem to be already sold.

“Such a great pickup,” exclaimed one fan, who is excited to see which shoes Gary fills in the coming days to help the Texas Longhorns bounce back from their troubles. On the other hand, many volleyball fans also believe that Elliott should turn his gaze toward the high school scene to find new talents for the team. “Honest question: does Texas even recruit high schoolers anymore?” pondered one such fan.
When Skinner transferred to Texas from Kentucky, fans were elated to see such an explosive talent join the Longhorns’ roster. However, with her on her way out after just three years, one is bound to question if Elliott is doing something wrong to retain his payers. “She’ll transfer out of Texas next year. The horns usually suck at the talent in and fail to keep it,” sounded one such fan’s frustration. What do you think? Tell us in a comment!
