Did Norris volleyball just pull off the biggest upset in Nebraska's volleyball history against Omaha Skutts?

It’s that time of year when Nebraska women’s volleyball is taking over, and this season’s been packed with drama! A few days ago, Nebraska volleyball marked its full sweep in the Pacific Northwest in the Big Ten volleyball season. However, back home, a whole different kind of volleyball history was being made. Fans were calling it the overthrow of a monarchy, as the Omaha Skutts had ruled the Class B title for an entire nine years—until, on November 10, Norris Volleyball stepped up and dethroned them!

On Sunday, Norris Volleyball took an epic five-set thriller to defeat the juggernaut of the Omaha Skutts. The job was challenging, as the SkyHawks didn’t give any loose moments to the Titans to breathe easily in the game. Rather, the packed Devaney Center witnessed the SkyHawks putting its feet into the game after facing a loss in the opening set. Yet, the Ann Jelinek-led team kept the momentum from passing to the opponent. They returned with all their might in the fourth set and hammered the death bell in the fifth set. Finally, the scoreline was shaped as 25-23, 21-25, 17-25, 25-18, 15-8.

With that epic win, Norris volleyball claimed the Class B title in 2014—a truly remarkable achievement after battling through countless hurdles. But hold up, there’s more to this story! Turns out, someone was cheering on the Norris squad from the sidelines, and this isn’t just any fan. None other than Maisie Boesiger, a Nebraska Huskers volleyball player, was showing her love for the Class B champs, even while riding a bus.

So, what’s the deal with Maisie’s sudden support for Norris? Well, it’s not just because they’re awesome—she’s got some pretty personal reasons. First off, Maisie’s sister, Malorie Boesiger, is the setter for the SkyHawks, and she was right there in the final, battling it out on the court. But that’s not all—this family connection is even deeper than you might think.

On Sunday, Christina Boesiger kept her hands on the trophy for the third time as the Norris coach. She was there in 2013 and 2014 when the Titans lifted the trophy. She also witnessed the moments when the Omaha Skutts took the final away from the Titans in 2020, 2021, and 2023. Yet she never lost hope. A few hiccups had been there for her on Sunday, though. But it failed to disrupt her mood. After all, she is the coach of Norris Volleyball and the mother of Maisie and Malorie.

Standing at such a juncture, Christina Boesiger did not have a certain loose moment to think about anything less than a victory. She had her younger daughter on the court and the elder one cheering from miles away. Later, when asked about the emotional rollercoaster, she couldn’t help but gush: “I believed in them the whole time and when they came out between the fourth and the fifth (sets), those are probably some of my most favorite moments ever.” Undoubtedly, those came as worth waiting for. And what about Maisie Boesiger? Does she have any further connection with Norris volleyball that led her to cheer?

Maisie Boesiger counts on her sister’s role in Norris volleyball highly

Did Maisie Boesiger feel some extra nerve connections with Norris Volleyball’s victory? Oh, you bet she did! The 21-year-old has had plenty of reasons to stay deeply rooted in that moment, especially considering her history with the team. Before joining the Nebraska Huskers in the spring of 2022, Maisie was a key player for Norris volleyball—and her mom, Christina, had big dreams of her helping lead the squad to the top. And Maisie started exactly that way.

Over her four years with Norris Volleyball, Maisie stacked up some impressive accolades. She earned two Class B all-state awards and, as a senior, helped lead her team to the state championship final twice. Maisie also ended her Norris career as the all-time leader for career assists and aces and even set the single-season assist record for the Titans. But despite all those individual triumphs, the elusive Class B title had still slipped through her fingers.

Enter her younger sister, Malorie Boesiger, who—like a true prodigy—has already surpassed Maisie’s record for the most assists in a single season. And now, with the Class B title finally in hand, it seems like Malorie has taken up the mantle her sister once carried, fulfilling the dreams their mom held for both of them.

So, in the end, Maisie might not have claimed that championship herself, but it seems her sister just might have completed the journey in a way that made the whole family proud.
