The NCAA Volleyball is currently in its off-season mode after a spectacular 2023 season. With the off-season, comes the new recruiting and trading procedure of players, prompting coaches to prepare a fresh blueprint. Fans actively track the roster news for their favorite team. But, it turns out that the reason on which the excitement of fans rests is being heavily tampered with.
Kirsten Booth, the head coach of Creighton Bluejays Women’s Volleyball, has slammed NCAA Volleyball for the way players get recruited. The head coach started an entire thread on X to shed light on all the aspects that are corrupting the process. She also said that several coaches are involved in trying to rig the system with unfair means.

Starting her thread via her official X account, Coach Booth wrote, “Div I Women’s VB is one of the worst sports for “tampering” in recruiting. I challenge our coaches, club & HS coaches, & parents w/ the question: Is this what we want our sport to be?” While the tone of Booth’s tweets showed agitation, they also carried disappointment for NCAA volleyball.

She further wrote, “Do we want to follow in the steps of some other high-profile sports that have this reputation? Is cheating the rules to win what we want to role model?” The head coach alleged that volleyball coaches deliberately tamper with the process of player recruitment with their authority and influence.
The Creighton volleyball HC also gave examples of how coaches tamper with the process. She said, “Sending videos of their community, program videos, talking about NIL amounts, etc. This is not ok! Anything directed by a coach is tampering and a severe NCAA violation-but this is harder to track!” While she listed many more examples, her thread wasn’t just a slandering crusade. She also offered a solution.

Offering a solution to this grave problem, Booth wrote, “How can all of us help? Coaches, we all have to do better. (Especially our top tier coaches.) Don’t try to not get caught, but instead do things the right way. Role model to your athletes that “cheating the system” to win, isn’t the right way to do things.”
She also asked high school coaches, volleyball players, and their parents to educate and inform themselves about the rules. According to her, doing so can help them hold unlawful coaches accountable. This can also inculcate seriousness in athletes about the rules as well.

Craig Skinner, the head coach of Kentucky Wildcats, also agreed with Booth and appreciated her for calling things out. He agreed that their sport is losing value because of a lack of integrity in how things happen in the system. Ending her thread on a positive note, Coach Booth said that volleyball is growing exponentially and they can give the sport a good direction in their actions. What are your thoughts on this?
