Is the AVCA ranking system flawed, keeping Nebraska Huskers from their deserved number one position?

The Nebraska Huskers and their powerhouse captain, Lexi Rodriguez, are on a roll that shows no signs of slowing down. Just days ago, the Huskers clinched yet another impressive victory, sweeping Oregon in three sets (25-12, 26-24, 25-18). And if that wasn’t thrilling enough, this win unfolded before a record-breaking crowd of over 8,500 fans at Matthew Knight Arena, creating an electric atmosphere that only added to the team’s latest triumph. And then, Nebraska journeyed north for a late-night showdown against the Washington Huskies on Saturday. But changing venues did nothing to alter the Huskers’ rhythm, as they again claimed a swift sweep (25-17, 25-11, 25-21) and marked their 21st consecutive victory, bringing their season record to a staggering 24-1 and an undefeated 14-0 in conference play.

Yet, there’s still one sticking point: the AVCA rankings. Despite racking up these wins, the Huskers remain in that elusive second spot, trailing just behind the Pitt Panthers. For the seventh consecutive week, even with 12 first-place votes, Nebraska remains locked out of the top position. And while the rankings may hold them back, nothing is slowing down their star libero, Lexi Rodriguez. Only days ago, Lexi tied for second place in Nebraska’s program history for career digs, joining the legendary Kayla Banwarth with 1,706 digs. Now, she’s moved ahead, securing her place as second all-time in career digs for Nebraska with 1,731, surpassing Banwarth. And the achievements don’t stop there! This week brings yet another milestone for Lexi, making her remarkable season even more unforgettable.

On November 11, Nebraska Volleyball lit up X with another big announcement for their star libero, Lexi Rodriguez. The team proudly shared the news that Lexi was named Defensive Player of the Week, with the caption,She’s that girl @Alexis14Rod is now 2nd in program history with 1,731 career digs! Capt. Lexi is your @B1GVolleyball DPOTW!”

But hold onto your hats—this isn’t her first time snagging the honor! This marks Lexi Rodriguez’s seventh career weekly defensive award and her second of the season. In the game against Oregon, Lexi continued to shine, racking up 14 digs and holding Oregon to a .133 hitting percentage. And if that wasn’t enough, she followed it up with 11 digs and two aces against Washington, holding the Huskies to a .158 hit rate.

With Lexi Rodriguez anchoring their defense, Nebraska tops the Big Ten with a staggering .162 opponent hitting percentage this season. And speaking of her record-breaking digs—she’s now ahead of Kayla Banwarth and inching closer to Justine Wong-Orantes’ all-time lead of 1,890. But here’s a twist: did you know that Kayla Banwarth herself was a key person in bringing Lexi to the Huskers?
