Volleyball fans who’ve been watching NCAA, international, and even Olympic games have come to expect some things about the stats. While the crucial info such as which team is leading the game, by how many sets, and how long has transpired are always included, specific stats are often dished out in small doses. And although LOVB (League One Volleyball) is not here to completely flip the established format on it’s head, it aims to go the extra mile.

The league knows filling the TV screen with a myriad of different stats will only make things confusing. In fact, many fans didn’t even like their approach of inserting various stat screens in between the actions. “You can’t miss play for a graphic or replay,” one fan complained on X. However, they already have a solution to help users find all or as little of the stats they want during each live broadcast.

LOVB’s unique approach of giving freedom to the user

While LOVB issued a statement promising to iron out their broadcast woes, their ‘Match Central’ will act as the hub for users hungry for details. However, the Match Central stat page isn’t just a place for experienced and avid fans to pour over the stats as they keep up with the game. It’s a place where even the casual fan has the freedom to learn everything about what they’re watching.

“We strive to educate every level of volleyball fan about the sport and how it’s played,” the LOVB stated on January 7th. If you’re wondering if they plan to do that, then the answer is through customization. Whether it’s a single live match or the league-wide table, fans will have the freedom to view only the stats they want.

Unlike the NCAA, which only gives limited selections such as match-by-match or total stat basis, the customization will have no limits on the Match Central page. “Users can even create their own box score and select only stat categories they wish to see,” the organization added in their statement. Fans saw the first example of exactly how detailed these pages will be in the inaugural match between Atlanta and Salt Lake.

What’s your perspective on:

Will LOVB's detailed stats revolutionize how we watch volleyball, or is it too much information?

Have an interesting take?

The Match Central page listed every stat anyone would ever need, including which team was playing on which side of the court. Users could access everything from set-by-set stats to minute details such as sorting the numbers via ‘attack’ or ‘block’. And that brings us to the depth of these stats.

Providing stats you won’t find anywhere else

While the LOVB provides the standard states such as Kills per Set, Kills Percentage, Blocks per Set, and so on, there are several categories that viewers won’t find when looking up NCAA or even Olympic-level games. X-Page Avid volleyball put is best ahead of the January 8 game. “Looks like we’ll have access to stats you won’t find in the NCAA box scores (and even some pro),” posted the page.

“Transition efficiency, passer ratings (4pt scale), good block touch %, defensive dig stats/offensive conversions, etc,” added the volleyball page. However, this is not all, as the LOVB has also tweaked some FIVB rules to price even deeper insights. For example, unlike the NCAA’s three-point passing scale, League One Volleyball has introduced a four-point passing scale.

Unlike the three-point scale (3 perfect/good, 2 okay, 1 bad, 0 error), the LOVB has eliminated the confusion between ‘perfect’ and ‘good’ passes. The new pro league’s scale will score passes according to 4 perfect, 3 good, 2 okay, 1 bad, and 0 error basis. So it’s clear that the LOVB is serious about reshaping how volleyball fans see stats.

However, that’s not all, as they have created a system designed to help even the newcomers taking an interest in analyzing volleyball stats. And judging from their response to fan criticism, there’s little doubt that the league will continue to perfect the Match Central based on feedback as well.
