The 2023 Santiago Pan American Games promised to be a spectacle. It has not failed to deliver on that promise. There have been some dominant performances in multiple disciplines. One does not need to look further than the USA Women’s beach volleyball team, for an example. The pairing of Corinne Quiggle and Sarah Schermerhorn-Murphy has been brilliant.

In the Peruvian capital four years ago, Karissa Cook and Jace Pardon won Team USA’s first-ever gold in beach volleyball. Seeking to replicate that, Quiggle and Murphy began strongly with a 2-0 (21-13, 21-18) win over Peru on Day 1. They followed that with another dominant win over the Independent Athletes team, winning 2-0 (21-13, 21-11). On Monday, they would face Argentina in a clash that would decide the winner of the pool.

The Argentine pairing of Ana Gallay and Fernanda Pereyra also came into this match unbeaten. They, too, won both their prior matches 2-0. The pair also won the silver medal in Lima four years ago. Once again, team USA poured cold water on their designs. Quiggle and Murphy emerged victorious once more. The USA Volleyball handle on X, formerly Twitter, highlighted their achievements directly after. A mention of the Men’s beach volleyball pairing was also made. They, too, advanced to the quarterfinals as pool winners.

Though it was a 2-0 win, the Argentines stretched the Americans more than any opposition up to this point. The scoreline reflected much the same as Team USA won 24-22, 21-17. Now, they await their quarterfinal opponents. That match-up will take place on Wednesday. As mentioned on USA Volleyball’s official website, Sarah Murphy hopes to take the same energy into the knockout rounds. She noted they were playing well, sticking to their game plan, and making adjustments as necessary.

Team USA looking to add another gold medal in beach volleyball

The expectation from the pairing of Quiggle and Murphy will be nothing short of winning another gold. So far, they have a trio of 2-0 wins to show for their participation in the 2023 Pan American Games. In the knockout rounds, though, they will have no alternative but to start from scratch.

It remains to be seen if Corinne Quiggle and Sarah Murphy can make history repeat itself a few days from now. If present performances are any indication, that cannot be ruled out at this point. Undoubtedly, they will have one eye on that potential historic achievement. The win over the 2019 Pan American Games’ silver medalists will be a welcome boost. Only time will tell if that proves to be prophetic.
