Martial arts legend Bruce Lee made a great name for himself in Hollywood. Although he had initially come to the US to get a degree, his fate had several surprises for him. Unaware of how his life would be in the west, Lee and his sister Agnes visited a fortune-teller to predict his future. Even though, the prophecy revealed a famous and prosperous future for Lee, he did not believe it at first.

In Lee?s biography, Bruce Lee: A Life by Mathew Polly, the master?s siblings Agnes and Robert expressed Lee?s emotions when he was leaving for the US to make his life. It was the first time the Little Phoenix was leaving his family in Hong Kong to make his life and the thought of it made him apprehensive like every other human being.

Bruce Lee was overwhelmed a week before his departure

Since his parents had lived in the US for work previously, Lee had the country?s citizenship. Hence, he decided to enroll his name in the University of Washington to pursue a degree in philosophy. Amidst one of the most overwhelming times in his life, Bruce and his sister Agnes decided to visit a fortune-teller a week before his departure. The crone made a generic statement about Lee that ?someday he would be rich and famous.?

On listening to the prophecy, Lee and Agnes laughed it out. However, deep down she always knew that his brother would become successful. Although the prediction was in Lee?s favor, his stomach twisted in knots as the day of departure approached.

The master?s little brother, Robert Lee revealed in the biography that Lee came to his room a night before his departure. While he was asleep, Lee sat on his bed and expressed his gut-wrenching feeling. He said, “I?m going to leave for America to study. I don?t know what it?s going to be like over there.? Robert revealed that he could understand his apprehension as he did not know what the future held for him.

What did Bruce Lee do when he first came to America?

Bruce Lee was 18 when he visited America to study at Washington University in 1959. Before he enrolled his name in the university in 1961, he worked in the restaurant of a family friend.

To generate money for his living, Lee began teaching kung fu in Seattle and soon opened his first school, the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute. Later on, he opened two more training schools in Oakland. Lee charged $20 a week for three classes a week. He also gave private classes for which he charged $275 per hour. Students were fine with Lee?s expensive fee cost as they valued the master?s worth.
