Record anniversaries of legendary competitors frequently bring up wonderful memories of an athlete’s career. The era before internet recognition existed, when there was simply a pure love of sport, adds to the splendor of these medals. Records from before the turn of the century also proved the individuals’ potential in an unorthodox professional path. One such ascension of a track and field athlete is still remembered in sports history for his sprinting career. He continues to engage with the community through his social media as if he had never left the ground.
The focus had shifted from earlier, when his sprint records made headlines, to his open remarks online. He never hesitated to set a record and has begun recognizing his significance in the field. The 12x Olympics champion, Michael Johnson, recently penned a few lines expressing the experience as his previous win entered its 28th year.

Yesterday, at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Michael Johnson won a gold and set a world record in the 200m race. The Hall of Fame winner ran 19.32 seconds in the sprint, beating his previous record. @TDISportsClips tweeted a clip from the race yesterday, bringing back memories of his incredible victory. Johnson reposted saying, “You often here “When preparation meets opportunity”. This was that moment!”
It’s interesting to note that Johnson had previously broken the 200-word mark at the U.S. Trials on June 23, 1996. However, he improved his abilities in the Games and became the first man to ever win two events, true to his remark. Similar to how his 1,600 m relay team finished first in 2:55.99, he also won the 400 m by finishing in first place. He boosted his portfolio that year with three unbeatable wins that no one had ever witnessed before.
While he earned a feat never before achieved the American track and field legend had his fair share of setbacks. Prior to his 1992 Summer Olympics, Johnson fell sick after being slated as the forerunner to win the 200 m. He managed to finish sixth in his semifinal heat, missing out on the 200 m final by 0.16 seconds. Even though he won the team relay, winning the solo titles was difficult. However, during his peak, Johnson persevered with his unwavering determination, taking first place in a number of other competitions.
