Another day, another withdrawal. And this time, it is the current fastest woman in the world- Elaine Thompson-Herah. It is safe to say this year’s track and field events have not been off to a great start. Multiple events have seen multiple big-name withdrawals and have left the fans disappointed. Elaine had a tremendously successful 2021, which she capped off by being named the ‘Laureus Sports Woman of the Year.’

The Jamaican withdrew from what would have been her Diamond League season debut in Birmingham.

Elaine Thompson-Herah withdraws from the Diamond League race

Elaine did everything right in 2021. She won the 100m and 200m sprint events at the Tokyo Olympics. She also won the gold in the 4x100m relay sprint, notching her gold medal tally for the games up to 3, an Olympic record. Elaine defended her 100m title at the Nike Prefontaine Classic as well.

In a recent development, the Olympic champion withdrew from the Diamond League meet in Birmingham. This news comes as an act of caution after Elaine experienced some discomfort in training.?“The decision not to travel to Birmingham was taken out of an abundance of caution after she experienced some discomfort in training,”?said?the meet organizers.

Elaine was to race in a field that included Olympic bronze medalist Shericka Jackson and World silver medalist Dina Asher-Smith. Also in the lineup are Olympic 200m silver medalist Gabby Thomas and this year’s World no. 3, Cambrea Sturgis.

Notably, Elaine ran her personal best time of 10.54s at the Eugene Diamond League in 2021. This time is just five-hundredths of a second slower than the FloJo’s world record. As a Nike athlete, Elaine is expected to take part in this year’s Nike Prefontaine Classic scheduled to take place on the 28th of May.

Chasing FloJo’s record

Florence Griffith-Joyner set the world record for 100m with a?time?of 10.49s in 1988. Although controversial, the time still stands. Many athletes have tried to beat the record, but all have failed. The Jamaicans, however, are closing in on the gap day by day. Elaine spoke in an interview about how she is targeting FloJo’s incredible record.

She said her primary aim is the World Championship, and she wants to break the world record. Elaine also added it would be spectacular to break the world record as a 30-year-old. It would be something that will be written in every history book.

Thus, by the looks of it, the history books are ready to be written, and it is up to Elaine what she wants to fill in.
