During the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, Emmanuel Bor,35, encountered an unexpected challenge: his shoe fell apart halfway through the demanding 10k race. Despite this setback, he showcased remarkable resilience, finishing 25th in the competition. Undeterred by the adversity, he navigated the course, including the challenging mud pit, with unwavering determination. Notably, Bor is not only a talented athlete but also a former member of the US Army, exemplifying both physical and mental strength.

However, Bor’s achievements define his athletic prowess. Outdoors, Emmanuel Bor boasts an impressive array of personal bests across various distances. His achievements include clocking 1:51.64 in the 800 meters in Gainesville (2009), achieving a time of 3:41.65 in the 1500 meters in Bangkok (2007), and recording a swift 7:52.58 in the 3000 meters in Eugene (2018). However, on February 26, 2022, Emmanuel Bor clinched second place in the USATF Indoor 3,000-meter final, securing a coveted spot on the US team for the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships. This marked a significant milestone for Bor, as it was his inaugural appearance representing the United States at the World Championships on the track. However, his anticipation was cut short when he learned of an unexpected development: he would not be able to compete in the upcoming event.

Who is responsible for Emmanuel Bor not performing in the World Championships?

Bor, a member of the US Army’s WCAP, enjoyed the privilege of full-time training alongside his military service obligations. Normally, WCAP athletes require approval from the Army to compete in international events, a process that Bor had successfully navigated in the past, such as his participation in the 2019 World Cross Country Championships. Yet, on March 8, 2022, Bor received the disheartening news from his commanding officer, Captain Robert Cheseret, that his leave was denied, thus forcing him to forgo the World Indoors competition.

The denial of Bor’s leave, attributed to “security reasons” by Bor himself, was met with inquiries from the running community. Though the Army cited the current US State Department advisory discouraging travel to Serbia, Bor’s supporters speculated whether geopolitical tensions surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine might have played a role. Despite this setback, Bor remained resilient, acknowledging the Army’s unwavering support throughout his athletic journey.
