Tokyo like the rest of the world was a ghost town during the 2021 Paralympics Games. The game witnessed no exultations emanating from the empty seats inside the arena. As the tenacious athletes ascended the podium, their triumphant gazes searched for cheers from fans, instead, they were met with a haunting silence. However, the razzmatazz waited for them on home soil as the winner’s families welcomed them back in a loving embrace.

One of the most heartwarming moments from 2021 was when USA’s Nick Mayhugh broke down in tears at the airport in the arms of his loved ones. The Paralympian felt like a war hero returning home with four new pieces of hardware to adorn his trophy closet. Now, as the prospects of a repeat victory are inching closer, the athlete beckoned the fans to the stands with a heartfelt message.

Nick Mayhugh became an exception in the Paralympic domain by winning four medals in the 2021 Games. However, to his dismay, his golden victory received no fervent applause from the fans in the stadium. Now, months away from the big event, Mayhugh has rekindled the fire in his heart and is resolved to KKKwin again. He was caught in the familiar milieu by Team USA and proposed that he share a few anecdotes about his intentions for the Paris Olympics 2024. In an X video post captioned, “The best is yet to come 3x Paralympic gold medalist @nickmayhugh reflects on the legacy he wants to leave in 2024 and beyond”, he shared his wisdom and his vision for the future.

His present goal is to be “BETTER THAN I WAS IN TOKYO”. He proclaimed that his biggest adversary is himself, stating, “I WANT MY LEGACY TO BE MORE SO ABOUT WHAT I DO OFF THE TRACK”. Although he did not preclude his ambitions to rack in more accolades on the track, he dedicated his gold medals and his world records to the fans. But these will serve his greater ambitions to have a positive impact on the community. He claimed this is “WAY MORE REWARDING THAN A MEDAL”. His goals for the Paralympics are even loftier.

Nick Mayhugh’s vision beyond 2024

During an exclusive with World Para Athletics, Nick Mayhugh said, “I want to leave my legacy in the sport but also out of it to educate people about the Paralympic Games. I grew up to be a 21-year-old not knowing anything about the Paralympics and I never want that to happen again”. Now, it is his mission in life to attract more eyeballs to his sport and the Para athlete will not stop until that happens.
