The Qazaqstan Athletics Sports Complex in Astana, Kazakhstan, saw the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Astana Meet commence on January 27th. Track stars from all around the world went head-to-head in a sheer speck of talent. Amidst the array of skills, an American track sensation, who had once playfully dubbed a track icon “an old guy,” took center stage. Yet, as the men’s final for the Astana Indoor Meet Gold kicked off, this 28-year-old star delivered absolute perfection with a bold win once again.

USA wins gold in Astana Indoor Meet Gold

At the men’s 60-meter final in the Astana Indoor Meet Gold, eight contenders were poised to set the track ablaze. However, leaving his seven rivals on the track in his trail, Demek Kemp, the lone contender from the USA, finished first with a time of 6.55 seconds. A post on X by RunBlogRun showcased the final scores. While Demek Kemp clinched the podium with his solid finish, Shuhei Tada of Japan finished second with a time of 6.58 seconds. And third on the podium was Akihiro Higashida, also of Japan, who finished third with a time of 6.59 seconds.

Other notable contenders included Richard Kilty of Great Britain, Rohan Watson of Jamaica, Andre DeGrasse of Canada, Jan Volko of the Czech Republic, and Tosin Ogunode of Qatar. Interestingly, this is not the first time Demek Kemp has secured a bold win. Did you know that he once playfully referred to the iconic retired Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, a two-time 100-meter world record holder, as an “old guy”?

At the Boston Indoor Grand Prix in 2020, Demek Kemp won the 60-meter race with a winning time and personal best of 6.50 seconds. He blazed past the iconic Asafa Powell, a former two-time 100-meter world record holder known for consistently breaking the 10-second barrier and setting world records in 2005 and 2008. While Kemp clinched gold, Asafa Powell finished fifth with a time of 6.71 seconds. Demek Kemp expressed feeling great about his performance and even mentioned having good competition and being glad to achieve a personal record.

However, when asked about competing against Asafa Powell, Demek Kemp dismissed the idea of Powell being an icon, stating, “He’s an old guy.” As the 2024 track season kicks off, Demek Kemp, the lone contender from the USA at the men’s 60m final at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Astana Meet, has once again seized the spotlight with a bold victory, proudly raising the American flag in Kazakhstan.
