Former American track and field athlete and three times Olympic gold medalist was found dead in her home in Florida. The 1990-born sprinter grew up in a small community in Sand Hill, Mississippi, surrounded by financial issues at an early age. She began earning medals in the high school championships for 100 and 200 meters dash races coupled with long jump wins. The accolades kept pouring as she brought home three state titles in the relay and competed in women’s basketball.

With an impressive portfolio, she entered the University of Southern Mississippi with an athletic scholarship. She emerged as one of the most successful NCAA athletes, making it to the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and 2016 Rio Olympics. However, everything came to a standstill when the news of her sudden passing surfaced, leaving everyone in shock.

US Olympic sprinter faces tragic pregnancy complications

The Sandhill native, Tori Bowie, was merely 32 when she was found dead in her home in Winter Garden, Florida, several days back. Although the cause of her sudden passing was not revealed until an autopsy report was by USA TODAY Sports on June 12. The reports revealed that Bowie was estimated to be 8 months pregnant at the time of death. She had a “well-developed fetus” and went into labor when she passed away. She suffered respiratory distress and eclampsia complications.

If reports are to be believed, Bowie could have suffered a seizure while her blood pressure rose during the time of pregnancy. The complications were further clarified by the Cleveland Clinic, “Eclampsia typically occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy. It’s rare and affects less than 3% of people with preeclampsia. Eclampsia can cause complications during pregnancy and requires emergency medical care.” Her death was declared natural by the medical examiner at Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office upon the examination of the autopsy.

The 32-year-old was found dead in her bed when the locals reported a missing complaint of a “woman in her 30s,” and the Orange County (Fla.) Sheriff’s deputies ran a welfare check. As the tragic news broke, there was no news about Bowie having a company. Her talent agency was among the first ones to officially talk about the incident. They shared a tweet that said

The track and field personality had an incredible athletic career as the nation’s pride from a very young age. She brought home some of the most significant prized possessions.

Bowie’s journey as a decorated athlete

The US athlete’s career deserves all the recognition it can garner. As a naive 23-year-old professional, she made her name at the NCAA, the Olympics, and the World Championships. With a will to shine brightest among fellow athletes, she made her professional debuts at the USATF Championships, Diamond League, Adidas Grand Prix, and Herculis meet. At the NCAA, she became the first athlete to win the long jump titles in indoor and outdoor competitions.

Some of her most prominent wins come from the Summer Olympics in Rio and the World Athletics Championships. Bowie won big at the 2016 Summer Olympics, winning gold in the 4×100-meter relay, silver in the 100-meter dash, and bronze in the 200-meter dash. She also won a gold medal in the 4×100-meter relay team at the Rio Olympics. The team achieved the second-fastest time in history, after the Soviet Union’s feat in 1985.

At the World Athletic Championships, she outperformed her opponents winning a gold in 2017 and a bronze in 2015. Bowie had an amazing athletic career, spanning over six years since her professional debut. The fans caught the last glimpse of the decorated professional at the Doha World Championships in Qatar, where she finished fourth. Her tragic demise creates a void in the sprinting world, leaving behind a mark on women’s contribution to athletics for generations to seek inspiration.
