Home/Track & Field

Quincy Wilson is back on the track! And it’s safe to say—he is supercharged. Why wouldn’t he be? He became America’s youngest track and field Olympian this summer and won a 4x400m relay gold in Paris. However, that was more of a team effort, no doubt! But you can bet it sure left him raring to show off what he can do solo.

And recently, Wilson did get a chance to boast those top-tier skills. The Bullis High School young gun ran his first individual race of the new indoor season this weekend at the U.S. Marine Corps Holiday Classic. And interestingly, he has a surprising confession to make about the contemporaries he ran with. PS: They do not worry him, but fuel him to perform better!

Quincy Wilson ran the 600m race this Saturday and clocked a personal best time of 1:17.19 in it, which was also a new meet record and America’s #2 fastest high school timing. But in doing so, he surpassed his equally talented peers like Colin Abrams and the rest of the lot. Thus, when questioned in a post-meet interview by EXL Sports Media on how he did that, Wilson voiced an interesting take.

“After you got ahead, there were such talented runners behind you, Colin and Alex. So how did you stay ahead and focus on the race in front of you?” the correspondent asked. To which Quincy Wilson replied, “I knew that there were great runners coming into it.” He was prepared for the field to be lined up with rising stars who were capable of clocking blistering times!

That was because Quincy Wilson saw them at practice every day and knew what they could do on the track. Thus, he even knew that their presence would fire him up to put in that extra thrust. “And so I knew that my teammates were going to push me to where I wanted to be. So without them in the race, I probably wouldn’t have ran that,” said Quincy Wilson.

And what’s surprising is that despite being competitors vying for the same positions, Quincy Wilson and the others had no bad blood. In fact, they are brothers on and off the track! Giving insights into their bond, Wilson said, “Those are my brothers, and we’re going to go to war any day. And today I was able to come on top, but I know at the end of the day, we have battles in practice just like this in the meets.”

Well, it’s incredibly mature of them, isn’t it? After all, they are a bunch of ambitious teenagers, an age where it’s highly possible to get competitive and dream of being the best. But Quincy Wilson and the others are taking it in the right spirit! However, not every part of his weekend return to the track was as positive. After all, you win some, you lose some, right?

Wilson’s fans question his comeback

On December 27, Quincy Wilson also attended the Ocean Breeze Holiday Festival, where he dabbled with the Sprint Medley! After all, he’s too young and should test himself in various situations, right? Thus, he anchored the 400-200-200-800 medley and was responsible for running the longest distance in the combination.

However, it ended up being a disaster. The Olympic gold medalist, Quincy Wilson, completed his leg of the race in 2:10.07, as a result of which, his team was pushed back to the total time of 3:34.40. This time, his competitors had left him high and dry as the rest of the Bullis team, featuring Kenneth Adams, Demetrius Lewis Jr., Alexander Lambert, and Colin Abrams, finished ahead of them in 3:25.37.

This led one of the fans to comment, “Really out of shape. He was sucking air so hard just trying not to pass out.” Well, it looked like Quincy Wilson tried to be the jack of all trades, but he couldn’t. And that may have led his contemporaries to surge past him. However, he does have his strong areas where he truly shines. Thus, this swap of ranks constantly goes on between Wilson and his ‘brothers.’ Thankfully, all of them take it with great sportsmanship!
