Usain Bolt is a name that practically everyone knows, not just because he’s a track and field legend, but because he’s a global superstar. However, the records attained in 100m in 9.58 secs and 200m in 19.19 secs achieved in the 2009 World Championships in Berlin remain unbroken up to date though he retired in 2017. Of course, while Bolt’s raw talent is undeniable, a huge part of his success goes to his coach, Glen Mills, who’s been by his side since 2004. Now, Mills is passing on his expertise to yet another incredible athlete—the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles is training under him too!
Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s hurdling queen, has officially parted ways with her long-time coach, Lacena Golding-Clarke, and has been training with renowned Jamaican coach Glen Mills since September. While initially kept under wraps, it has now been confirmed that Amusan had been secretly taking guidance from Mills in an effort to revive her career. Rori Dunk confirmed the news on X, writing, “Amusan’s goal is to reclaim her world title in 2025.”

It is still shocking that Tobi Amusan decided to work with a new track and field coach since she split with Golding-Clarke who has been training her since 2016. They have scored big wins together like her world championship win in 2022, where she set a new world record for the second time. Golding-Clarke helped her a lot when she was in college at the University of Texas at El Paso to when she was climbing the summit of her stardom. In the past, however, things have not worked out for Amusan in the same as before. She even fought a very hard battle with a doping case from AIU and World Athletics, despite being cleared by CAS.

Still, she hasn’t been able to find that peak form in track and field. After not medaling at the 2023 World Championships and missing the final at the Paris Olympics—her first time missing a global final since 2016—Amusan is turning to coach Glen Mills, who’s worked with athletes like Oblique Seville. It seems like he’s already impressed by her potential as they work on getting her back to her best.
Glen Mills reveals the secret to Tobi Amusan’s potential comeback in track and field
Mills, who is characterized by his professionalism in coaching track and field, has heaped praises on Amusan by describing her as very professional. He said that she has a good attitude towards training that has made work with her to be easy and productive. “It has been a joy working with her because she is a true professional. She brings to the table an approach that is really refreshing,” Mills said. He also emphasized that despite common perceptions, he has experience coaching women, citing past work with athletes like Aleen Bailey, Cathy Rattray, and Kerron Stewart. Mills said he does not doubt their future together and said that was why she was so dedicated, committed, and hard-working!

Mills pointed out that he and Amusan are operating synergistically to intensively focus where she needs enhancement Honestly we never sit down and talk about our strategies once in a while. “We discuss our strategies from time to time. It’s been a nice experience; she is into it and enjoying it,” Mills said. He said that Amusan has been expressing herself as being happy with the progress that has been made by her and she sees herself making progress daily. Thus, both the coach and the athlete have high expectations for the next year!
