Celebrated sprinter Usain Bolt once remarked, “I’ve learned that injuries can happen. It’s how you manage them and get back, prepared and ready.” Today, those words ring true as the world’s fastest man faces a new challenge on his journey. Bolt’s recent injury at the UNICEF Soccer Aid event serves as a reminder of his own words about managing setbacks and returning stronger.
Bolt, the multiple Olympic gold medalist, suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the event in London. The incident occurred on Sunday at Stamford Bridge during the second half of the Soccer Aid match. Bolt, who holds world records in both the 100 and 200-meter races, had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. He later shared an image on Instagram showing his right foot in a protective boot, confirming the injury to his fans.
He captioned it, “Ruptured Achilles but done know we a warrior 💪🏿”. He was seen throwing up a peace sign and holding a pair of crutches. Though Bolt was seen smiling in the picture, it’s common knowledge that an Achilles injury is quite painful. Usain Bolt was serving as the captain of the World XI team, which faced a squad of former England national players, including Jermain Defoe.

Robbie Williams, one of the soccer event’s co-founders, played a pivotal role in ensuring the successful execution of the event and achieving its intended purpose. The post-match report, which revealed a fundraising total exceeding $16 million, confirmed the fulfillment of the event’s objectives. The Soccer Aid event followed England’s five consecutive wins. During the match, Bolt was making a run towards the goal when actor Danny Dyer tackled him harshly right at the edge of the penalty box.
In the meantime, Eden Hazard took up the opportunity of a free kick. As the game led on, with 3-2 to England, Bolt seemed to be in discomfort. Though he refused to back off. As England’s momentum grew, Bolt dropped back into Jermain Defoe’s path to halt the former England striker. However, even before Bolt could do that, he went down, clutching his leg. Medical personnel took him off the soccer field on a stretcher. Though England won the match 6-3, Bolt did not have such luck.

Previously, Bolt had suffered an inflammation of his Achilles tendon. It restricted him from too much movement and put pressure on his knee and ankle. In 2010, he had to take 2-3 weeks off as well. This was to prevent any additional injury to his Achilles tendon. In 2016, as well, he ruptured his Achilles tendon due to a charity soccer match. That required him to wear moon boots and use crutches.
Apart from the Achilles tendon, Bolt had previously injured his hamstring. He even had to withdraw from the 2016 Jamaican Olympic trials due to a grade-1 hamstring tear. The same repeated in the 2017 World Championships during the 4x100m relay. Injuries have caused Bolt to withdraw from high-profile events. But just as Bolt has bounced back in those conditions, we’re hopeful he’ll do the same this time as well.
