Sha’Carri Richardson Looks to Settle Score With Jamaican Rival in A Different Race

In the contentious world of track and field, a day without competing looks dull to the athletes. Whether on or off the track, they are always toe-to-toe with their adversaries. Among them, Sha’Carri Richardson needs a special shout-out for outclassing her Jamaican counterparts now and then. Despite rising to fame in 2019 as part of the LSU team, her biggest wins came at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

Clocking in at 10.65s, Richardson bested her strongest rivals Shericka Jackson and Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce in the 100m dash. But according to recent news, since the 2024 Paris Olympics is breathing on the shoulders, the arch-rivals have reappeared for a unique contest to make a mark again.

Sha’Carri Richardson looks to add another laurel to her purse

The Laureus World Sports Award for Sportswoman of the Year, well known for honoring stellar achievements of sportswomen, has released the nomination list. Laureus Sport’s Instagram caption reads, “Here are the exceptional sportswomen nominated for the 2024 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award: @aitanabonmati, @sherickajacko, @faithkipyegon, @itsshacarri, @mikaelashiffrin, @iga.swiatek”. Though the list includes names of stellar women popular for their sporting finesse, we have our eyes affixed on Richardson and Jackson. As their surnames rhyme, they have also been in sync at the 2023 Worlds when it came to clinching podiums. Since 2000, the award ceremony, presented by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, has been going strong.

The first winner in 2000 was the US sprinter Marion Jones, who had won 3 golds and 2 bronze in the Sydney Summer Olympics the same year. Now, 24 years later, it’s time for the 23-year-old Richardson to fight for it, but the women alongside are no less worthy. Richardson is already maintaining a rare winning streak

On December 3, 2023, the 4x100m gold medal winners Richardson and Noah Lyles received the Night of Legends award. For their remarkable performances in athletics, the two buddies walked home, smiling ear to ear. The former took the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Athlete of the Year for women, and her happiness knew no bounds.

“With the God that I serve, everything happens when it’s supposed to happen. So when I stand here today as the world champion, that’s because now was the time for that to happen. Now is the most impactful it would be, the most powerful it would be, and the most sincere it would be”, said the 2023 Worlds 200m bronze medalist. Hoping to move ahead with the same perspective, Richardson is eyeing to include the Laureus Sport award as well.
