It’s that kind of year that comes once in a decade or so and the year 2024 has already begun with a bang! In the much-anticipated clash between track titans Noah Lyles and Christian Coleman, the USATF Indoor Championships witnessed the 2023 World Championship’s triple champion outperform Coleman, clocking in a time of 6.43 in the first showdown of 2024!

Noah Lyles outdoes his strongest rival

The reigning champ of 60m didn’t stand a chance to carry the victory flag home. Coleman ignited hope in his heart after his Eugene Diamond League victory over friend-turned-adversary. But the 200m World Champ didn’t require a second to extinguish it. There have been speculations and predictions before both the track bulls locked horns. But most fans and analysts subtly sided with Lyles on the grounds of his past year’s performance. In the 100m, 200m, and 4x 100m relay, the 26-year-old Tokyo Olympics 200m bronze medalist completed a sprint treble with golds in all.

Lyles’ unachieved dashes against Coleman

At the 2023 Millrose Games, Lyles’ false start didn’t bother the 2019 100m World Champion. He made his way to the finish line before anybody could challenge his position. That was his seasonal, personal best, which came in virtue of the prowess demonstrated on the indoor stage. Later, in 2023, another instance in which Coleman accomplished the race ahead of his compatriot. It was the Eugene Diamond League, where Lyles, fresh off his ‘threepeat’ performance from the Worlds, had faced his biggest upset.

Not to miss out on the mid-2023 event, the Bermuda Grand Prix. Clocking in at 9.78s, the 2023 Worlds 4x100m gold medalist left Noah Lyles behind at a silver time of 9.80. The chasing was convincing, but he fell short for some seconds in the end. Being banned from the Tokyo Games due to a missed drug test was a hard blow to Coleman while the Tokyo bronze medalist was paving the way for glory. Aiming to bring back the best spectacle, both the US track stars will look to make waves in Paris.
