This past week, the entire world came together to pray for the Titanic Submersible named ‘Titan’. In a tragedy that has now shocked the world, the U.S. Coast Guard has presumed all 5 people on board deceased. The ‘Titan’ lost all contact last Sunday, just hours after it began its descent towards the Titanic wreck. The submersible operated by Oceangate Expeditions was designed to carry up to 5 people and specialized in deep-sea explorations.

Among those presumed dead are the Chief Executive of Oceangate, Stockton Rush, Hamish Harding, a British businessman and explorer, Shahzada Dawood, who was a British-Pakistani businessman and his son; and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French maritime expert. Now former track star Robert Griffin III has taken to his social media platform to tweet about the unfortunate incident.

Former NFL quarterback and track star Robert Griffin III uploaded a tweet and wrote,?“Praying for the families who lost their loved ones in this tragedy.?Twitter users were quick to reply with similar tweets of support and one user commented,“You got it RGIII. No time for judgments. Prayers for the grief and sadness these families are going through.” Shortly after the submersible lost contact, an international search and rescue operation was carried out for days.

On Thursday, debris of ‘Titan’ was found near the Titanic wreckage with the help of a remote-controlled vehicle. When asked about these new findings, the U.S. Coast Guard commented that the debris is ?consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel.??It was also reported that the main cause of the implosion may be the extreme pressure at the sea depth. Some reports also suggested that the U.S. sensors picked up signals of an implosion. The authorities concentrated the search operation in the North Atlantic, with an area size estimated to be twice the size of Connecticut. Experts of submersible vessels and deep sea exploration had been warning Oceangate for the past few years about safety concerns. The problematic design of the Titan and lack of safety standards were some of the crucial things that were being overlooked by Oceangate’s wealthy customers.

Experts had warned about Titanic wreckage explorations for years

Oceangate was quick to tap into the deep sea exploration market and provided tours for $250,000 per person. Despite experts’ warnings about the size and capacity of the vessel in question, Oceangate undertook several expeditions for the Titanic wreckage. The implosion of the Titan reminds us about the dangers of deep-sea explorations. One of the deceased Paul-Henri Nargeolet was a maritime expert who had been to the Titanic wreck over 30 times.

The Titanic wreckage is located around 12,500 feet below sea level. If we take the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, and place it in the ocean, the skyscraper would only go 2,700ft under the ocean. The Titanic wreckage site is in a very hostile environment. For this very reason, corporations must ensure every possible safety measure for their passengers, and even then, the risk involved is too high. It remains to be seen how new legislation would ensure passenger safety and accountability from these deep-sea exploration corporations.
